Very underwhelmed
by Shelley08180 at Citysearch
We went there with my mom for an after dinner dessert for her birthday. We stood around waiting for someone to seat us and finally just sat ourselves. My mom had the Mexican coffee which was delicious...everything after that was a disappointment. We ordered the brownie but didn't realize it had beer ice cream on it. We told the waiter we didn't like it at all and he just laughed and walked away. We also had ordered the death by chocolate and all it was too tiny blobs of chocolate - hardly the "large" dessert we had expected from the menu.
- Pros: Location
- Cons: Food, Service, Price

I was very excited to try out the Chocolate Bar. Unfortunately, the food was strange and overpriced. There is a teeny, tiny menu, including a few savory snacks, then a few ?inventive? yet overpriced desserts. $9 to 10 for a dessert is way too much money. The sausage was extremely dry and as salty as a salt lick. Several people had a bite and were grossed out. A one inch square piece of chocolate costs several dollars, and the taste was no better than Alon?s or Godiva. The desserts were not as one would imagine from the menu descriptions. A piece of cake sounds normal enough, but what if it is enclosed in a bell cloche scented with a sprig of lavender, and you have to pour a shot glass of strangely infused liqueur over it? The cloche had the heat trapped and the cake was so hot it burnt the tongue, and got soggy. Puddings were weird, as well. I am an adventurous eater and have a master?s (and many years of experience) in the hospitality field; however, this place was just too ?out there? (even for NYC, much less for Decatur). It may be good for a glass of wine or a chocolate martini, but save the weirdo desserts for the Jetsons.
- Pros: Give them credit for trying, have a drink
- Cons: Weird, overpriced food that just doesn't work
expensive romantic place

My boyfriend and I went here to end our anniversary date night out. It was on a Monday night so there weren't a lot of people there which was perfect for us. The waiter was really nice, knowledgable, and quick. I had the pumpkin pie martini and he had the chocolate bar martini. Both martinis were great-nice blend of alcohol and flavor. He had the Oreo bar dessert and I think I had some fruity dessert which was AWESOME! The truffles were great to take home. However, I was extremely surprised at the price. Our bill was more than $50 for just 2 drinks and 2 2nd course desserts! It was a nice place, but I wouldn't go there often. I need more variety for desserts, but I have stopped by to buy some more truffles!
- Pros: ambience, different types of desserts that you can't find just anywhere
- Cons: parking, PRICE
Mascarpone Cream instead of Whipped Cream...yum!
by HilaryIrvine at Citysearch
I absolutely love Chocolate Bar! It's the chocolate lover's delight! Absolutely best chocolate martini I've ever had. The service at the bar has always been exceptional. And they have a 73 (?) single year port that is to die for!
- Pros: Mascarpone Whipped Cream!
- Cons: Maybe a bit casual for a romantic evening?
Not impressed!

After hearing so many great things about this place, I was thoroughly disappointed with my first visit. Definitely not worth the hype the local papers have been giving it since it opened. As mentioned in the other reviews, the wait staff was uninterested and inattentive, starting the evening off on a bad note. You wouldn?t expect this sort of service in any restaurant in downtown Decatur! The deserts were not all that they have been cracked up to be, and I left there feeling that I would have rather had a piece of the chocolate cake at Watershed down the street instead!
- Pros: Candlelit tables on street
- Cons: Underwhelming service, no parking, not enough value for cost
Love the concept, but
by decaturmark at Citysearch
It was wonderful to see downtown Decatur graced with such an original concept. Unfortuantely, the owner seems to be unable to have pulled it off. What started as a brilliant idea to serve unique, and sometimes bizarre, dessert items has morphed beyond the realm of the mundane. Friends have raved about the martinis here, yet when I tried one I immediately became sick to my stomach from the copious quantities of flavored simple syrup that had been added to the drink. It was enough that I left Chocolate Bar to trudge up the hill to Sage to have the friendly blonde woman with the great smile (can't think of her name--Michelle?--and I don't think she's there anymore) mix me a true craft cocktail. My times at Chocolate Bar have been characterized by long waits, indifferent service and mediocre "treats." It was a wonderful concept that truly failed in its application and I can't help but think that it was simply the wrong person at the helm. After all, whatever happened to the wonderful chefs who helped open the place? For as much as this joint touts its earliest reviews, those reviews were all about them.
- Pros: a unique concept
- Cons: fails in its application
