Don't let the exterior fool you: This pink hacienda excels in preparing spot-on traditional Mexican favorites.

In Short
Don't expect guac prepared table-side or gimmicky high-end eats at this pink cinder-block off Memorial Drive. The dimly lit hole in-the-wall dishes real-deal chow, the type that should be expected from an always-packed shady looking shack. If you want new-wave Mexican hit Rosa Mexicana but here traditional signs abound. Refried beans get cooked with a heavy dose of lard, lengua (tongue) is taco/gordita option and glass bottle Cokes are imported from Mexico. Justifying this isn't your suburban Tex-Mex chain, expect plenty of patrons of Mexican decent and lots of Spanish being rattled around. Watch out for the margaritas as they pack a punch.
Authentic.

Mi Barrio is in a small unassuming, stand-alone building on Memorial Drive near the intersection with Boulevard. While suspect from the outside, once inside, Mi Barrio reveals itself to be a truly authentic Mexican restaurant. Mi Barrio is about the food and presents itself without any pretense other than what it is: a family run Mexican restaurant. Indeed, it's easy to forget you are in Atlanta once inside.
The food is fantastic: dishes are cooked upon ordering (so be prepared to wait a few minutes longer than one might at a factory like El Azteca). The staff is friendly and attentive; willing to give their worthy opinions upon request. The restaurant attracts a mix of day laborers, downtown yuppies, Grant Parkers and Cabbagetown hipsters.
Note: There are only a few parking spots out front. Later in the day, it appears to be okay to park in the neighboring Western Union lot.
- Pros: authenticity; quaintness; food
- Cons: limited parking

I just moved into the neighborhood and this place has blown me away. The food is authentic mexican cuisine served in a family-run/owned restaurant. Don't be turned off by the "hole-in-the-wall" looks of the place, the food and service is great and the place is clean. You can get out of there for less than $10 (after tip) on a great meal. Highly Recommended.
