Hotmess Highland Bakery
by cjamesatl at Citysearch
After several visits to this restaurant, I've given up. Today, we arrived at 1:00pm for brunch for a table of 3. After a 45 minute wait for a table, the host kept seating tables of 2 only. He couldn't figure out that pushing two 'couples' tables together could seat 3 sooner than having to wait for a table that sat 4 people.
We left and we will NOT be back again. Although the food is tasty, it is SO NOT worth the wait. There are plenty of other better restaurant options in Inman Park. It still surprises me that patrons of this establishment tolerate such low standards. In this economy, restaurants should be falling over themselves to accommodate the very people who keep them in business.
Good luck Highland Bakery. You'll need it!
- Pros: Food okay, but not consistently uniform
- Cons: Horrible wait staff, clueless.
Good food, BAD attitude.

First, I should say that the food was excellent. This is the best place in Atlanta to find fresh salmon with an everything bagel. However, the hostess is AMAZINGLY RUDE. (Yeah, I had to capitalize that one)
We arrived at 11am on a Sunday with most of the outside tables empty, so we sat down at one of them. A minute later, the hostess came out with a major bark saying that others were waiting for tables and we just couldn't "do what we just did." So we got up. No problem! With more than three empty tables outside, we didn't think they were very busy. Bad call on our part.
Then she stopped us and said it was okay because the people waiting were waiting for a table inside. We were free to stay seated and she would get us a waiter. HUH!?
So why would she cause such a commotion if the tables were actually free? Who knows, maybe she was having a bad day. But we thought it was a really rude way to start a meal. We started to leave anyway and go elsewhere, but one person with us insisted that the food was worth it. Fortunately, the rude woman was just the hostess and not our waiter. We never saw her again, which was a good thing.
- Pros: Great fresh salmon
- Cons: HORRIBLE attitude from the hostess
AVOID--food tastes terrible

Look, I am not a picky person when it comes to food---and I'm always open to new places. But Highland Bakery is so heavy on the butter and sauces and creams that I could neither finish the meal and felt sick afterwards.
So i'm writing this review so others won't be sorely disappointed as I was.
I had a to go order from there the other day---it was just awful. When I picked it up the people were very friendly and I was excited about my lunch. It was a bit pricey ($7 sandwiches, $8 salads etc) but I thought it was worth trying out since it seemed to be a nice, original local restaurant.
My grilled cheese was SOAKED in butter....I couldn't even taste the cheese and the garlic bread smelled so strong. The side order of Chips were very oily and frankly tasteless. My "house salad" can only be described as "blah" because the lettuce was limp and the sauce had too much mustard inside. Finally, the piece of chocolate cake ($6) which looked so pretty from the outside just tasted so heavy and ceamy (not in the good way).
Overall, not good at all.
- Pros: Nice atmosphere
- Cons: Food is awful, heavy and buttery and often tasteless
great? not so much

I went just to try the baked goods. I bought a brownie, cupcake, lemon bar and cheesecake. The brownie was dry and overcooked. The cupcake had no flavor. the lemon bar crust was doughy and the powder sugar had a chemical taste to it. The cheesecake was ok but nothing to rave about. The person who helped me seemed to be bothered that she had to work. I do not recommend going back and I will not be bothering to try it again.
- Pros: nothing was good
- Cons: desserts and the service
Rude staff actively works to ignore you

Amazingly bad service!
I stopped for breakfast, there were a total of 5 customers in the entire place. The waitress had numerous long conversations with the one table she was working, and breezed directly past me as I tried to get her attention (and a table) several times. After her last trip from the kitchen, she came out, and then began stacking and drying plates behind the bar. I literally stood by myself for about ten minutes, while the staff went about small trivial chores without so much as making eye contact, never mind a "I'll be with you in a moment" . A co-worker of mine had a similar experience, and tried to warn me away from this place, and I wish I had listened to her. A busy staff, I can understand. But this was just plain lazy and rude behavior from the servers.
- Cons: non-existent service
Terrible experience

I have never felt the need to review a (bad) restaurant until now. This is certainly the worst experience I have ever had. The food was below average (atctually I did not get to really eat!) The breads were barely edible.
But the worst of it all was the SERVICE. Our coffees were cold and bitter. We were not given sugar for 15 mins after we got the coffee. Utensils were not given for the longest time. I sent back an order (terrible terrible, French Toast) literally untouched and still saw it in included in the final bill. I had to ASK to have it removed! The grilled cheese did not have the veggies I asked or ...just plain rubbery cheese. And the sausage... thin slices, definately frozen for months and heated.
This place needs to hire help with atleast average intelligence.
- Cons: bad service, below average food
So far from right!

This place needs some real help immediately. Its so very sad in this day and age to see a place thats just sorely misconceived from the start. Either run by overly zealous inexperienced restaurateurs, or just fools that were never taught, The Highland bakery is a classic example of what not to do with a grass roots hospitality concept. The bread?? My lord, someone ask the owners to eat some real bread. Even Whole foods bread is better and thats not saying much. The bagels? golley, listen folks,.. a bagel is boiled and baked not piped from a pastry bag. And whats with the Cyclops sized egg sandwiches?? ever heard of user friendly? ever heard of seasoning your food? My god,..the place is sooo entirely flawed, i cannot imagine what a second time patron looks like. Save your money and drive to pastries a go go in Decatur. !
- Pros: cute exterior, view of bakery facill
- Cons: all but the look
