Best Turtle Mocha in ATL!
by trrinatl at Citysearch
I need to buy a vowel so I can say OH MY GOD! This place was amazing. After working all night long at a nearby hospital, I was a little nervous about going to a neighborhood breakfast place to grab a coffee. I quickly found a parking space right beside the building and made my way inside. The staff IMMEDIATELY were polite, greated me and asked if I wanted to be seated. I just wanted a TO GO coffee and the guy behind the counter whipped up a turtle mocha for me. I was like drinking dessert, I was in heaven. I also orderd a couple of muffins. The Banana nut muffin was AMAZING, better than mom's, but I"ll deny it if she ever reads this. I asked for a couple of menus to take back to work, the staff seemed greatful that I was willing to refer my co-workers.
- Pros: Friendly staff, GREAT TURTLE MOCHAs,
- Cons: Parking looks like it could be a little stressful
Best. Grits. Ever.

Let me start of by saying that I don't like sweet potatoes.
They can't seem to decide whether they want to be a side dish or dessert. They're too sweet for a side dish and, in dessert, they somehow manage to be heavy without being rich.
In short, I don't like candied sweet potatoes, I don't like sweet potato casserole, I don't like sweet potato souffle, I don't like sweet potato pie.
With some cinnamon and brown sugar, I'm willing to eat a baked sweet potato but, even then, that's more for the beta carotene than for pleasure.
That said, I love the sweet potato pancakes at Highland Bakery. Generally, I find sweet potato dishes to be cloying and heavy, but the pancakes at Highland Bakery are fluffy but still substantial - these'll keep you full for a while - and cut the sweetness enough so that the flavor melds nicely with the syrup and pecans they're served with.
Until Highland Bakery, I also never understood the appeal of grits. They usually need something added to them such as cheese because they're so bland, bland, bland.
Highland Bakery grinds their grits on site and it makes a huge difference.
Their grits are so full of corn flavor that you don't need to add anything to get them down.
Also, Highland Bakery has the best iced tea I've had yet. It's not the usual iced tea that's either flavorless or overpoweringly strong.
- Pros: grits, sweet potato pancakes, iced tea
- Cons: parking

Highland Bakery is an unassuming haven of culinary delight. The sweet potato pancakes are pure bliss; they are, by far, the most delicious pancakes I have ever experienced.
If you live in or near Atlanta, you MUST dine here. Visitors to the area should automatically add Highland Bakery to their itineraries.
- Pros: Helpful and courteous staff, stellar brunch, vegetarian options
- Cons: NONE
Have to try the grits!

This is my first time to go on the other side of the city to have brunch but it was completely worth it! Our waitress was so helpful and nice. I ate the Ricotta blueberry pancakes with a side of grits and it was amazing! Cant wait to go back again for the grits!
- Pros: ambience
- Cons: parking
Most underrated breakfast in the city
by johncri at Citysearch
An old building has been renovated into a restaurant/bakery and we are all the better for it. While the service can be mixed, the food is worth it. Fabulous grits, stone-ground on site, are the pinnacle of this restaurants grub. Eggs Benedict are tasty, and can be done with either traditional Canadian bacon, or with crabcakes, and either way is scrumptious. My wife swears by the breakfast sandwiches.
If you are too late getting into Thumbs Up Diner, shoot around the corner and give this joint a shot. You won't be dissappointed...
- Pros: Excellent food, plenty of seating.
- Cons: not really any
best wholesome breakfast

i have no idea what happened to the people who say the food is bad and the service is horrible. my husband and i live in the neighborhood and make a habit of going to the highland bakery almost every weekend. it is one of the best breakfasts offered in the city, and for a much better price than most other places. the staff know us now, and were always very friendly. the food is amazing, especially the grits (ground on-site). my husband loves their breakfast sandwich and gets that almost every time we go. if you head over for lunch, try to crabcake sandwich or the grilled cheese on rosemary bread, both are very good. if you are one of those people who don't understand why people eat grits, please try highland bakery's. they will surely change your mind.
- Pros: grits, bohemian atmosphere, inexpensive
- Cons: crowded on weekends, slow on weekends
A real bohemian joint

I love the casual feel of the highland bakery. The breakfast is always good! They actually offer vegi sausage option with your eggs, YEH! Love the staff, they are always friendly and helpful. Haven't tried lunch yet. The baked goods I tried don't look to good, but they taste great! Will be back!
- Pros: breakfast, service, baked goods
- Cons: busy weekends
Rude staff actively works to ignore you

Amazingly bad service!
I stopped for breakfast, there were a total of 5 customers in the entire place. The waitress had numerous long conversations with the one table she was working, and breezed directly past me as I tried to get her attention (and a table) several times. After her last trip from the kitchen, she came out, and then began stacking and drying plates behind the bar. I literally stood by myself for about ten minutes, while the staff went about small trivial chores without so much as making eye contact, never mind a "I'll be with you in a moment" . A co-worker of mine had a similar experience, and tried to warn me away from this place, and I wish I had listened to her. A busy staff, I can understand. But this was just plain lazy and rude behavior from the servers.
- Cons: non-existent service
GREAT!!

This is by far my favorite place to eat! They have the best sandwiches *the Hummus sandwich is amazing!* and the baked goods are very tasty. The service there is always friendly. The bakery is packed with art students so all of the food is very creative and a delight to look at. The breakfast there is also very good *try the Blueberry pancakes, they are delicious!*
- Pros: food, service, creative/colorful
