Usually good, but now has problems!

My experiences with Chequers in the past have been good - good seafood, nice waitstaff, etc. However, we went for their Happy Hour specials - $5.95 for appetizers (including raw oysters, crab dip, and more), drink discounts (which are not impressive, $1.00 off some drinks), and $8.00 whole lobsters. Not a bad deal. However, you have to sit in bar or on the patio. If there are a couple of you, sit in the bar, that's fine. But DO NOT sit on the patio like we did. There were insects everywhere. They lit citronella lanterns, but they simply did not work, and we were swatting at gnats and yellow jackets like crazy. Also, our service was painfully slow, which did not make us happy - and they ran out of two items on the menu.
- Pros: Seafood is good
- Cons: Patio has insects, service is slow
Really good seafood, great desserts!

On a recent trip to Atlanta, my sister and I had dinner at Chequers Seafood Grill. We had made reservations on a busy Thursday evening and were seated promptly. The decor reminded me a bit of a cross between Red Lobster, complete with "fishmonger" plaques, and an old upscale restaurant with dark wood and high metal embossed ceilings. The volume was somewhat muted by the wood and glass dividers between tables. They have a nice wine list, which is good, but don't even think about drinking the water.
We started with delicious biscuits and I ordered the lobster bisque soup and my sister had the mozzarella & tomato salad. The salad was delicious, flavorful and generous. The soup was average, with very little resembling lobster in it. My sister had the George's Bank scallops, which had wonderful flavor and was somewhat of a light meal. I had the seafood mixed grill. It contained a very small portion of salmon, 2 jumbo sea scallops, 4 jumbo shrimp and lump crab meat. The crab was excellent, with little or no breading and a very nice sauce on the side. The salmon was good, though not great. The shrimp and scallops were nicely prepared. With garlic mashed potatoes and sauteed spinach, it was a very large meal. In spite of that, when the waiter brought over the dessert tray, we were unable to resist a berries and cream confection sandwiched between filo with a liqueur topping as well as a berry topped creme brulee. While excellent, the creme brulee couldn't hold a candle to the rich decadence of the other, the name of which escapes me. I would seriously consider going back just for that dessert.
All in all, I really enjoyed dining at Chequers. The service was good, the food very good and dessert was fabulous. I would definitely consider returning to Chequers on my next trip to Atlanta.
- Pros: Lump crab meat, desserts
- Cons: water, ambiance
Food was good, service was good, prices suggested it should be better

Together, my wife and I had the Caesar salad, the house rolls, the lobster bisque, the seared halibut, and the seafood special.
The salad was just that - a typical if not above average salad.
The rolls were spectacular. Warm, and sweet, and salty, and crispy all in the right amounts.
The lobster bisque was uninteresting, and for 6 dollars a cup, should have been better than it was.
The seared halibut was...seared halibut. Again, very little was exciting about it. It looked and tasted like the kind of fish you'd buy at the store and cook yourself.
The seafood special contained greasy shrimp, a-little-too-rubbery scallops (while still not being bad), basic grilled salmon that tasted as if it may have been approaching the expiration date (not at it...but not ocean fresh) and uninspiring crab cakes.
The meal was worth 50 dollars. The total was 87 before tip.
I wouldn't complain to the manager over the meal, but I don't plan on returning. B- food paired with prices that tell you it should be A+ isn't for me.
- Pros: Great rolls, good variety
- Cons: Food isn't worth the price. Boring tastes.
Horrible service, average food

Ok, so I'll admit it, I ordered one of the cheaper things on the menu because I'm trying to save money. I got the Japanese Fried Shrimp, thinking they would be tempura like.
What I got was a meal from Captain Dee's. I am not kidding - I could have gone to Captain Dees and got the exact same meal and saved $15.
On top of this our waiter was almost never at the table, we waited nearly 20 minutes for a check after having to request one, and the waiters general disdain for us was VERY apparent. I have never had such a fake server in my life.
I will never go back here - I'm sure their other food is tasty, but the service was just horrible. We didn't go on a busy night, or a holiday, so there really was no excuse.
- Pros: polite hostess, average food
- Cons: servers, waitstaff
A great night!

I took my girlfriend to Cheqeurs for her birthday. We had a very memorable experience. We were greeted warmly at the door and shown to our table downstairs. Our server approached and introduced himself. He took time to walk us through the menu and explain signature dishes as well as specials. We had the chef's seasonal preparation of the seabass and a filet. It was amazing! The steak was the mosty tender and cooked to a perfect medium rare! Lorenzo also suggested a bottle of wine that we enjoyed so much that we had another! He was very attentive and professional. After dinner he brought us a dessert tray and described the desserts to us. The keylime pie was the best I've had in a while! All in all this was one of her best birthdays she said. we will do it again next year for sure.

Dirty Water

Let me first say the food is excellent...Service was awful.
I recently took my entire family to have the Easter Bunch..the resturant was very crowded and loud. I can handle that but when we started drinking our water we noticied that ever glass of water had someone elses dinner floating in it. Grossed out ...we brought it to the attention of the water boy. He said he would replace it...never did he or the waitress(who we rarely saw) ever apologies...The waitress was rarely around and then when we recieved our bill we were shocked to see that she added a 20% tip...what a joke.
- Pros: food
- Cons: loud and crowed and awful service
Wonderful Thanksgiving Dinner
by BelAnn at Citysearch
My husband and I live far from our families and are alone on Thanksgiving. After years of trying to find something decent we finally came upon Chequers. WOW! The food truly tasted like what I would get at home. All the traditional dishes were there!
The staff was very friendly and did a couple of favors for us.
No more awful Thanksgiving dinners. We'll be at Chequers!
