We Love it

by SusanSusan

Can't believe all the neg reviews.. This place draws such a huge crowd that people wait in line.. Think about it..if the food wasn't great, there wouldn't be a line out the door for lunch. Its worth the wait.

  • Pros: Great Food Cheap

Terrible and rude to the disabled.

by tyler_durden1006

I will never step foot in this place again. We arrived at Taqueria del Sol 10 minutes before it opened we were the 5th group in line and only 2 groups had made their order and were seated. My wife who had back surgery 2 weeks before could no longer stand up and needed to sit down. Being that then entire facility was empty she sat at a table. The manager Steve Shields promptly asked her to move to a non existant waiting area, even though she had alerted him to the fact that I was next in line and that she had recently had surgery. I can't believe that they would have the audacity to ask someone in obvious physical pain to move. I will never step foot in there again. Furthermore I emplore any one else not to frequent this establishment. The food is mediocre at best.

  • Pros: Nothing
  • Cons: Rude to the Elderly, Handicapped and just plain arrogant.

Act like sheep

by goodserviceplease

Rude employees, long line of sheep with no ability to judge what good food looks or taste like.

This establishment should have a sign that reads " Patrons have the right to refuse being treated like sheep"

  • Cons: Long line, poor food, awful employees

Sundown Cafe has been replaced by a Taqueria del Sol location as of March, 2007.

by Contributor

The Scene
Blackened windows and a nondescript strip shopping center don't beckon. Once inside, you catch the low-level buzz of patrons in the small bar and large, open dining room. The low-lit, monochromatic room--blond wood, earth-toned walls and tablecloths--is undistinguished save for a few mosaic animal sconces, Mexican prayer candles and one blood orange abstract painting that punctuates the back wall. Color is saved for the appealing food presentations. Counter service is no frills and efficient.

The Food
Authentic Mexican flavors abound, whether in sporty sounding boutique tacos or hard-core authentic street fare. Opt for popular hickory-smoked pork tacos with barbecue sauce and coleslaw, or addictive fried chicken tacos with lime-jalapeno mayonnaise. Also, try straight-up carnitas-style pork with salsa frita, or roasted brisket laced with tangy chili de arbol. Enchiladas--rotisserie chicken topped with green chili--are solid cantina fare. Don't miss a side of nicely spicy turnip greens or rich, smoky charros beans.

Great Texas Margarita's & The Taco Sargent!

by jaymaygm

We've being going here for a number of years, and the format has officially changed to that of it's sister restaurant's, Taqueria Del Sol! We always just go and sit at the bar with George, the Taco Sargent/Manager/Bartender! What a scream! If you don't have a sense of humor, you might be offended. He make's without a doubt, the best Texas Margarita in the ATL! He raises that eyebrow, tighten's that little mustach, and get's that smirk on his face. You can't take him seriously!

Sundown Cafe is where it all started with the taco craze in the ATL! The fish taco's with jalepeno tartar, BBQ Brisket taco's with slaw, and fried chicken taco's are fabu! Get a side of Eddie's green's, home-made guac, and the fantastic Pablano Shrimp & Corn Chowder. Cheshire Bridge Rd. is doing a makeover, and hopefully Sundown will update their interior, but never change the quality of their food and drinks. And let George stay around for a few more years.

  • Pros: Texas Margarita's, Taco's, & The Taco Sargent!
  • Cons: Not Open For Lunch On Sat.& Sun.

WHY CLOSED FOR LUNCH ON SATURDAY AND SUNDAY

by jaimeatl

Last Saturday my friend and I went to the midtown Taqueria del Sol for lunch...only to be highly disappointed by the long long serpent of ta line streched out into parking lot. Hung over and craving....some good TEX-MEX food fast....I quickly remember that Sundown Cafe wasn't to far away and served exactly the same recipes. Alas! They are closed on Saturday and Sundays....are they crazy? When else do folks have time to linger and enjoy such fine TEXMEX delicasies. Get with it Sundown and capitalize on all that business Taqueria del Sol has over in West Midtown!

  • Pros: GREAT FOOD
  • Cons: CLOSED SAT AND SUNDAYS FOR LUNCH

Good food for little $$

by 2inmidtown

Sundown is now running like Taqueria Del Sol, so you do stand in line to order, but once you order the food arrives fast ... the food is generally flavorful, the turnip greens and shrip corn chowder are both stand outs. Unlike the sister location, the Taqueria off Howell Mill, with service that can only be called surly at best, the staff at Taqueria Sundown is down right cheerful in comparison .. hi George. True, if the line is long, the wait to order can be daunting, but that's more because people take to long to order than due to the efficiency of the staff. Considering that the two of us can eat a good meal at Sundown and leave full, usually for under $20, i think this place is a deal.

Bad service, so-so food:What more could you want?

by karla592

Upon arrival, you stand in a line to order. If you do not know ordering procedures, the owner and/or manager make you feel like an idiot (sit at the bar and you get to hear how critical they are of their paying customers). You can't be seated without ordering first, even if you bring your grandmother with a walker. It's very difficult for parties >4. The food can be inconsistent. If you ask them to cook the chicken tacos more, they make you feel like an idiot again. If you want another drink after you are seated, you must order it at the bar again (as the wait staff/manager/owner rudely tells you). If you stay too long at your table or the bar, they rudely ask you to order more or leave. This place makes me feel like a second-class citizen.

  • Pros: Variety of tequilas
  • Cons: Rude Service, Mediocre Food, Unpleasant ambience

Best 'Ritas in Atlanta

by leilacom

The food at Sundown is great for sure, but the Margaritas that they craft will put you in Nirvana. The Texas Margarita is the signature concoction, blended perfectly with Premium cuervo, grand marnier, and their special margarita mix. A friend of mine who normally doesn't like margaritas loves the ones at The Sundown Cafe.

  • Pros: Margaritas, Food, service
