Overview
Given birth in 1973 by a group of local upstarts, the Contemporary (formerly the Nexus Contemporary Art Center) quickly became the multidisciplinary center of Atlanta's contemporary art universe. The largest local alternative art space is committed to introducing the newest work of local, regional, national and international artists through a series of thematic shows. Award-winning artists' books produced by Nexus Press win world-wide kudos, while the Artist Studio and education programs offer significant resources to a spectrum of local artists and the center's devoted audience.
The Draw
The Contemporary stages the chic ArtParty every year in late summer. Atlanta's most popular fundraising bash opens the fall exhibition season with an irresistible cocktail of art, music, fashion, dance and food. Thousands of artists and art lovers flood the scene, blissfully paying high-ticket prices to stand in long lines and bump elbows.
Weird - and Wonderful!
by nelly_guavita at Citysearch
I was recently recloated to the ATL from Houston, Tx, and was anxious to connect up with the local art scene. Having straggled down Peachtree Road looking at various galleries and museums I was scared that I was in the wrong town - until I discovered this place. If you are looking for the hottest, hippest, and darn weirdest art in town - get your bootie over to the Westside for the best in contemporary visual art. And is it my imagination, or are the gallery receptionists the cutest in town? The neighborhood is worth checking out, too. Octane for coffee, Figo for pasta, and Taqueria del Sol for tacos and frozen margarittas being my faves to date.
- Pros: hot hot art, cool crowd @ openings, friendly staff
