Good Southern Cooking without the fatback

by hthjones

Thelma's is one of the few places in-town to find rutabagas, collard greens, pinto beans and a variety of other southern favorites, done right. The selection varies day to day. Not having a hunk of fatback makes it even better.

The entrees also vary in southern fare (i.e. fried fish, fried chicken, baked smothered chicken, ribs, pork chops, etc.)

Expect spend about $10 - $12 for a meat, two veggies and a beverage.

On hot days, it's inevitable that the AC will be on the fritz. Depeding on which family member is serving at the time, will dictate how friendly the service will be.

  • Pros: Pros: entree & veggie selections
  • Cons: Cons: room temp controls

Auburn Avenue Rib Shack, It's Not! Where Is Thelma's Soul!

by jaymaygm

Many years back, we were major fan's of Thelma's Kitchen, over on Marietta St. Now she has moved to Auburn Ave. And she has moved to sacred ground, for many of us native Atlantan's. As a kid I would sneak over to the Auburn Ave. Rib Shack, for a slab of heaven. Now Thelma has taken over the old location, and that's a hard act to follow. We don't know if it's just time for her to retire, or the soul has just gone away. The fried chicken, mac n' cheese, and greens are just not the same. Soul food comes from the soul, but it's just not at this location on Auburn Ave.

  • Pros: Legendary Location!
  • Cons: Food Lacks Tasty Soul!

Soul food queen flourishes with Southern specialties.

by Contributor

The Scene
Nearly quashed by Olympic "progress," this hometown favorite survived Centennial Park and relocated to Sweet Auburn. All done up in industrial strength white, with a steamy centerpiece cafeteria line, this popular lunch hour destination is equally popular with attorneys, sliderule types from Tech and grimy transmission surgeons. A Coke cooler, a dingy black-and-white portable, and large plate glass windows are the chief features of this humbly decorated restaurant.

The Food
Dark meat special or pork chops? Rice and gravy or mac and cheese? Collard greens or limas? Sweet potato pie or pineapple upside-down cake? These are the tough dilemmas of this consistently good soul food. The fried chicken's worth a trip, as are the vegetables (don't be shy about ordering a vegetable plate--it's a local favorite).
