Best restaurant in atlanta on a budget
by rcogdell11
Malaya offers a wide variety of entrees at an affordable price. I have noticed that the owners have not only memorized my name and usual order, by remember most of their returning customers. Their vegetarian options are delicious and plentiful.
The only con is that they are located in a strip mall that is kind of out of the way...but it is nice that it's not always packed.
- Pros: Affordable pricing, vegetarian friendly, large portions
- Cons: location

Malaya, has a very warm and friendly environment. The establishment is managed by a real gentleman; friendly in his swagger, has an air of charm, which makes the visit to the restaurant much more enjoyeable. He is defintiely the personality of the place. The food is very flavorful. The restaurant provides for a nice lunch atmosphere, allowing one to have nice conversatioin and a great meal in under an hour.
Bizarre but Good

I have been here several times in the past 6 months. We continue to go because the dumplings are delicious and the main courses are great as well. However, we have had strange experiences with the staff. Our party asked for a wine/beer list and told there was none. We saw other patrons driking beer at their table and expressed our confusion. The waitress acted as if she didn't understand our questions and just kept smiling and shrugging. We asked if we could buy our own wine at the liquor store across the street. Again, the same response. After purchasing wine and bringing it into the restaurant we saw the staff serving other customers beer from behind the bar. When our waitress came to uncork and pour our wine she filled huge styrofoam cups nearly to the brim with our wine. The food was good but the staff is confusing and unhelpful.
No quality control. There is no excuse for the bad food.

This restaurant is the reason I have given up on delivery oriental food in Atlanta. In the past, it has been wonderful, but tonight. . . there is NO excuse for that food ever leaving the kitchen. Clearly, Malaya has very bad quality control problems. Our Mongolian beef was so horribly burned that it was inedible, and a simple visual inspection of it prior to the dish leaving the kitchen would have easily spotted this. The Nam Sod was also disgusting. It had no spice to it, tasted like they used artificial lime juice, and I don't believe they used even a drop of fish sauce. Malaya's Nam Sod is more like a sickeningly sweet candied beef than is the real dish. The curry I ordered was also sub par for this restaurant. The Hot and Sour soup was nearly flavorless. A very bad delivery experience. I cannot recommend against this restaurant heavily enough. If Malaya will serve the Mongolian beef they sent us, I can only imagine what horribly dangerous and spoiled seafood they would be willing to send out.
No quality control what so ever. It's a pity, I used to like this place. Go somewhere else. Save yourself.
- Pros: A wonderfully diverse menu, fast delivery and in restaurant service, good prices.
- Cons: No quality control and bad food make this a crapshoot at best. Why gamble with your life?
Exotic Asian influences run on the hot and spicy side.

In Short
Aside from colorful batik tablecloths, the only hints of decor in this storefront restaurant are red paper lanterns and framed prints. The eclectic Asian menu features veggie-centric dishes, like the Achar, a spicy pickled salad and a spicy garlic eggplant. The Malayan soup and Kari Ayam Malaya, a chicken curry dish, share a sweet coconut sauce. The Sambal Udang, a shrimp and okra saute, will awaken your taste buds with a jolt of heat.
Great food, great service

Since I discovered this place I have been going there many times - it has become "comfort food" for my wife and I. The food is great, the portions are generous, and the service is great. After going there only a few times they already know us and ask us how we've been, etc... I highly recommend this place for its value and friendly atmosphere.
- Pros: Great value (food, portions, service)

One of the best values in Atlanta
by Ben_Greenwald
The food here is wonderful, the staff is always friendly. Parking is great and its a nice quiet place away from the hustle and bustle of Buckhead. You can almost always get a table right away. There takeout business is brisk for the neighborhood that has been clued in to how good there food is.
Yes the food is spicy but that is what Malyasian food is like. Deal with it.
- Pros: Yummy food, Great Value, Different
