This USED to be a great place

by ddatl01

Whoever this new lady bartender is working at Mary's has just ruined the whole place. She has made so many people I know say they will never go back there again. I would suggest another bar, rather than go through the aches of that nightmare of a woman.

  • Pros: Normally a great, friendly staff
  • Cons: New female bartender

Drink, dance, karaoke and just be Mary at this cozy East Atlanta gay bar.

by Contributor

In Short
All are welcome at Mary's, part friendly neighborhood bar, part dance party. Choose the narrow downstairs bar for mingling and dancing or the upstairs nook for lounging and looking fabulous. Named the Best Gay Bar in America by LOGO, this hipster hangout is a draw for men, women, gay and straight. Patrons make the most of the small space: showing their stuff on the tiny dance floor, checking out the downstairs crowd from the upstairs bar or kicking their karaoke skills on Tuesday and Saturday nights. The campy drink menu, with such popular Marytinis as the Virgin Mary and Something About Mary, works well with the kitschy decor. The life-size, let-it-all-hang-out beefcake posters are a real eye-opener. Now that saucy sibling My Sister's Room moved in down the block, this EAV thoroughfare is hopping at all hours of the night.

Felt like a sardine.

I hadn't been to East Atlanta in a few years but what changes! I was expecting it to be a dangerous slum neighborhood but was shocked to see that it was actually quite nice! There's even a bunch of new retailers a couple of blocks down from the bar like Bestbuy and Lowes. Anyway that should clear up any hesitations about the neighborhood it's in. And boy did I hesitate for that reason.

I felt like it was a trendy crowd. Lots of straight'uns, mixed about 45 Les/45 Gay/10 str.

A bit loud on Karaoke night but not so loud that you can't have a conversation. The place was jam packed. I counted only about 100 people and there was no room to walk or even stand. For that reason I was a bit uncomfortable however I would return in the future. Parking behind the place was easy and free.

  • Pros: Nice upscale crowd, free parking, easy to get to
  • Cons: No room to stand/walk

BRAINSHATTERING

by Faustine

When I first moved to Atlanta from Rotterdam, my soul despaired. Every night, as the sun dipped below the horizon and darkness blanketed the city, I would cry out in anguish, "House, why hath thou forsaken me?!?" There was no answer.

Then, one evening as I traipsed the streets of East Atlanta with my blood laden with chemicals and ketones and my body swathed in a green Elizabethan lace catsuit by John Galliano for Christian Dior haute couture and my feet bound up in a pair of tattered black Reeboks, a familiar pulsation reached my brain: It was house. Emanating from Mary's, the familiar strains of house beckoned me. I entered the bar, and I have never looked back. Forgive me.

  • Pros: The beat, Hot VJ's, House
  • Cons: I'm addicted

Oh, go, you'll love it

by fordp

It's hard to have a bad time at Mary's. The crowd is always interesting and diverse, the bartenders skilled and friendly, the VJs competent and with a sense of humor, and the decor changes more often than Monica Kauffman's hairstyle. You won't be bored.

Mary's is a great place to meet up with your friends as your regular joint, but it's also the sort of place you can feel comfortable going to on your own to watch videos and meet new people.

  • Pros: Neighborhood feel, Newest videos, Private bathrooms
  • Cons: South of I-20, Closed Sunday

Lovely Mary

by superuserbfunk

I love this bar! There are so few gay bars in Atlanta that are just plain comfortable...This is one of them! Beautiful decor and two bars in this very New York-like gay bar atmosphere.

  • Pros: Decor, Two Bars, No Attitude
  • Cons: Not open late enough

The neon beckons

by erinbehan_citysearch

The bright neon light of Mary's sign shines in the dimly lit downtown strip of East Atlanta. I've never had a bad time here--friendly staff, nice drinks and an accepting clientele. Whether you're gay or out with your gay friends, you'll have a nice time. My only complaint is that Mary's isn't open later.
