Bravo! This opera troupe succeeds at making a stodgy art form relevant.

The Company
Long the bastion of older, wealthy people, opera isn't so in Atlanta. While still appealing to traditional audiences, the Atlanta Opera also attracts a rising young audience through student discounts, aggressive marketing and edgy programming.

The Performances
The company presents four fully staged grand operas at the Civic Center every year. In keeping with its experimental nature, the Atlanta Opera performs its first of 2002, Puccini's "La Rondine," with a twist. Audience members enter through a backstage view of an opera in the chaos of rehearsal. The opera's second performance, "The Pearl Fishers" is not Bizet's most famous work, but an excellent example of French opera. The story follows two men whose friendship is tested by their love for a woman. In September, the beauty of Mozart's music shines in the beloved "Marriage of Fiagro." The mixed-up comedy of manners is based on the French play by Beaumarchais. Closing out the season is "The Flying Dutchman," one of Richard Wagner's more accessible works.

I was rather reluctant in thinking highly of the Altanta Opera - well, I was wrong. They are fantastic! I thouroughly enjoyed the entire performance of 'The Pearl Fishers' and was entraced through the duration of the opera. I cannot wait to attend another program!

Enchanting

What a magical night. The opera company gave a splendid performance of Bizet's "The Pearl Fishers" yesterday evening. The simple sets were complimented by the gorgeous costuming. Gary Lehman gave a fine Atlanta Opera debut as Zurga. The entire audience was transfixed throughout the rather long performance.
