Historical Landmark!

by wrightone1

I have been visiting the Fernbank since I was 5 or 6. I have always had fun at the planetarium, and I hope my little cousins can have fun there too. Check it out!

For what it is- definitely recommended.

Note: it's not known as a 'high tech' museum so it's silly to expect it as such. The planetarium is wonderful...if you're not really interested in stars you're probably better off going somewhere else but I found it to be quite a treat. A nice break from the city as well

A total waste

NOt a real museum. I agree with the person from London. I am from NY, and this doesn't even compare to what we have here in NYC museum of Natural History. The Fernbank has, maybe 2 or 3 large dinosaurs. Come to NYC and see 2 or 3 seperate wings of dinosaurs. Hundreds and Hundreds. I wasted a day at the Fernbank. A total zip.

The celebrated Planetarium overshadows the aging interactive exhibits.

The Scene
The small number of worthwhile exhibits may entertain kids for no more than a few moments. The real star here is the Planetarium, one of the most advanced in the country. The Planetarium can reproduce the night sky as seen from any place on earth. More than 8,900 stars and other celestial bodies are projected on a domed screen 70 feet in diameter. Additional projectors create special effects, such as the rings of Saturn.

The Experience
To see the real things--stars and, at certain times of the year, meteor showers and planets--an observatory is open free to the public. In a more earthly vein, Fernbank Science Center has a 65-acre forest at its doorstep, unspoiled and relatively undisturbed except for a mile-and-a-half of paved trail. This pristine woodland is for serious studies in forest ecology, or simply a pleasant walk in the woods, but not really good for the kiddies.
