A real bookstore

by tisbury at Citysearch

I loved my visit to Charis. It was such a change to have someone helping me that knows about books. While they do not have the inventory that some bookstores may have, they were able to order what I needed. I will continue to shop there and recommend it to anyone who trully loves books.

  • Pros: staff, atmosphere, real book people
  • Cons: parking

It is not all that great!

by yampo at Citysearch

"great literature not found at B&N?" What titles are you talking about? Charis is small, the selection is very limited, and it cannot exists in today's book market.

If Charis is so valuled, then why is it on the verge of closing down? I have the answer! It is because the "loyal customers" (like yourself) do not shop there anymore. They now shop at Barnes & Noble and other chain stores.

  • Pros: none
  • Cons: small location, limited selection

Don't give up on this independent store!

by atl_lib at Citysearch

Charis has been around for 30+ years and if you haven't been there, you are missing out. They have so many titles...not just feminist / lesbian / counterculture stuff. If you support independent voices, you should not spend your dollar anywhere else in this town. Do you think that the big chains care about what you are reading?!? They don't...they just want your money. Charis cares about this community and they want to help us all to expand our minds.

The South's oldest feminist bookstore offers a comprehensive, wide-ranging selection.

The Scene
Warm, cheery, welcoming and scholarly all at once, this shop treats customers like old friends. If you need guidance to discover which book will scratch your literary itch, you're in the right place. There's a particularly strong selection of works by feminists, lesbians, and women of color.

The Goods
Gay and lesbian literature, biography, recovery, cooking, women's studies and psychology all fit neatly into the inviting space. The store has a nice children's section, too, with colorful, multicultural-themed books. Charis, pronounced Karis, has CDs, jewelry, T-shirts and other gift items such as calendars, journals and women's erotica. Frequent author readings bring literature to a more personal level, as do the girl's programs and writers groups. Stop by the store for a brochure on upcoming events.

Enlightening

by erinbehan_citysearch at Citysearch

Charis is one of the few independent women's bookstores in the country. The store represents its status well, with an excellent book selection, along with other bookstore items like greeting cards and postcards, etc. The friendly staff is always willing to help you find something in the store, or put it on order for quick delivery. If you feel strongly about supporting women's issues and enjoy reading challenging literature (that doesn't always make it to B&N), visit Charis.

  • Pros: good book selection
  • Cons: small parking lot
