Really Good!!

by thandiwe

This was a great place to go when you know the money goes into the food, and not how the place is decorated. It was really good. The portions were just right. To anyone who says the portions are small, its because they must weigh 200 lbs + and eats over 5 huge meals a day. The food is great! did not have the tea, but had everything else and felt like i just walked out of my grandmother's kitchen (who can cook her head off!). i will definitely be going again.

  • Pros: good southern comfort food, huge portions, decent price
  • Cons: no parking, open limited hours, closed every weekend

Yuck!

by cnewton

Have zero idea why anyone would go here. We try new places for lunch all the time. Carver's beats this place by about a hundred stars. The side sucked and portions were small. The chicken was mediocre, at best. The tea was not good. Just no, no, no. I don't understand all the rave reviews, must be family.

  • Pros: None
  • Cons: Just about everything

THE BEST- period

by spence113

Son's Place is my favorite restaurant!. I am a teenager and my mother used to eat at Deacon Burton's restaurant while she was pregnant with me and once i was nearing 6 or 7 years old, i began to eat there at least once a week. Now my enitre family (grandparents, unlcles, aunts, sister,brother-in-law) eats there regularly. Whenever I go, I always see a relative! I highly recommend the fried chicken or fish and the COLLARD GREENS are the only greens I will eat. Sweet potatoes and yams or out-of-this-world. And for dessert, the peach cobbler is unbelievable.Lenn and Beverly, the owners, are also so nice to all the customers and know most peoples names. Great place to have breakfast or lunch (as they are not open for dinner; they close around 3 p.m or when the food is gone for the day). My father takes his office there for parties and his entire staff has become beloved members of the Son's community. CATERING is a must. Thanksgiving, Easter, 4th of July, or maybe Christmas dinners can be made even more special by eating Son's soul food. I have never found another restaurant in Atlanta quite like Son's. They serve great food and make you feel like you are back in your mother's kitchen!! One bit of advice- going directly at lunch time (12 p.m.) can assure that you will be caught in a line, but if you don't take your chances you may not get what you want. They DO refil the food, but the food goes so quickly that you can never be assured your first pick. Around 1 p.m. is the ideal time becasue the lines have died down and the food should be almost fully restocked by now.

  • Pros: Near train station, easily accesible from downtown and midtown, affordable price
  • Cons: PARKING!!, small

The Deacon's Soul-Son(?) Lives!

by jaymaygm

Long time fan of Deacon Burton, I was sad at his passing a few years back. Along came Son's Place around the corner, with nearly the same fried chicken and sides. Whether he is the Deacon's son or not, this is real southern soul food. Meat and two or three comes with a HoeCake, and sweet tea, of course. We love the collards and Mac N'Cheese. Just a little hole-in-wall at Inman Park.

  • Pros: Good Basic Southern Fried Chicken & Sides!
  • Cons: Parking, take MARTA Train-Inman Park Station!

I frequent this resturant each time I am in Atlanta, I and I must say I enjoy "Everything" about it. If you're looking for southern cooking, you've found the spot.

Soul food classics shine at this DeKalb Avenue lunchtime standard.

by Contributor

The Scene
This noisily convivial soul food restaurant is a bright spot in the gritty, industrial world of DeKalb Avenue. Preserving the spirit, recipes and popular following of the legendary Deacon Burton's, which previously occupied the space next door, Son's Place has local legend status, if only by association.

The Food
Hoecakes, collard greens, gooey mac and cheese and, of course, fried chicken are the stars of this reliable down-home lunch destination. Vegetables--especially candied turnips, buttery lima beans and whipped potatoes--are fresh and tend to outshine the main dishes. But the pork chops, meatloaf and the fish special are good, as well. Be sure to save room for the cobbler of the day, the caramel cake or the to-die-for banana pudding.

yummm.....

I really enjoyed the food here. I'm from Alabama and i know good southern food and this place is excellent. None of that new fangled southern cooking where people fry there chicken in olive oil. this place will warm the heart and clog the arteries.
