We arrived on time with an 8PM reservation on a Saturday night, but still had a 30 minute wait.
Service was good, but the waiter seemed a little harried and distracted.
A major problem I've seen with this restaurant is that the red wines are served at very cold temperatures. Not sure why they would feel the need to do this. It means that you have to wait several minutes before it warms up to a drinkable temperature. This is not fun when you've you've paid a large sum for a bottle. I mentioned this to the waiter and he said that others have complained also. Apparently, management isn't paying attention.
Food was good, but not spectacular. My portion seemed a little skimpy.
I noticed that Murphy's has been bought out by the slick local chain, Concentric Restaurants. It appears that they've lost some of the personal touch they had when they were still owned by Murphy.
- Pros: Trendy, nice ambiance, great location.
- Cons: Does not seem to have the personal touch they once had.
Love it

Meatloaf here is great. I love walking around the Virginia Highlands and this is one of my favorite places to stop in for a glass of chard or piece of cake.
Worst Wine Tasting Experience in my LIFE (so-far)!!!
by crfranklin44
I attended a wine tasting event @ Murphy's on 6/14/11. We had RSVP for 26 people. There were other RSVPs for the same time. Unfortunately, THEY OVERBOOKED THE ROOM! The room was very quaint (small) to start, but they made it worst by asking one side of the room to squeeze together to add additional chairs!
The staff conducting the wine tasting started LATE even though the invitation that was sent for the tasting stated "POURING STARTS @ 6:30p." The wine staff announced, this will be a side-by-side tasting. I got excited when I heard that!!!! BUT, the other wine pourer didn't get the memo!!! He started pouring at the other side of the room and NEVER got to my side. I HAD TO PHYSICALLY HAVE SOMEONE ASK HIM TO COME AND POUR MY WINE AFTER 45 MIN OF GETTING THE 1ST POUR. NEEDLESS TO SAY, THE 1ST SIP WAS GONE BY THE TIME THE OTHER FINALLY CAME!!!!
The funny thing about this, I was sitting at the table with the President of the association hosting the event!!!
After another 30 minutes with no more pouring, I finally decided to leave!!!!! It's my understanding that they do this every week. I STRONGLY suggest if you are planning a tasting for more than 2 people to plan it somewhere else!!!
I will give a compliment to Valet, they were very prompt & professional with my car!!!
Not worth the wait
by foodies21
The food at Murphy's was good, but the service we got was horrible!!!! From start to end. My husband order an irish coffee, and it took our server almost an hour to bring to our table, YES, AN HOUR, we're not kidding!!!!! I even have to asked her several times before. We waited soooo long for our food and the people who were seated after us already finish their food. To make it even worst, the server messed up our order that we have to wait even longer!!
Because of this, We don't feel like going back there and dine in again even when the food was good!!
Wonderful Brunch... that Everyone Knows About
by ryansims
Situated on the corner of Virginia and N. Highland Ave, Murphy's is one of those VaHi rites of passage. Everyone from the neighborhood, including tons of folks from beyond the district, valet park or walk to find a staggering wait time for a brunch that is usually worth it. While you wait, check out the small wine boutique adjacent to the bar and pick up a bottle for later. Focusing on a southern-tinged menu, Murphy's excels with the mimosa-in-one-hand, baby-in the-other set. Shrimp and grits served on a bed of cajun gumbo keeps me coming back along with the addictive biscuits. However, Murphy's isn't all brunch business, the dinner menu proves to be as drool-worthy with items like spinach and sausage meatloaf and the Ashley Farms chicken breast.
- Pros: Once you get a table, its all good
- Cons: It is perpetually packed on the weekends
Good Food, Good Price, Thats Nice!

I ate at Murphy's with a friend the other night and really enjoyed the experience. We had the flat bread appetizer (not on the menu) which had tomatoes, cheese, and arugula. It was pretty tasty and not too filling which was good. For my meal I had the BBQ Salmon. I love salmon and this was not a disappointment. It was a generous portion and prepared well. My friend had the Hanger Steak which he said was really good. The only downside (which was not a big deal) was that it took a little longer than I expected for my meal to come out. Maybe 15 or 20 minutes after the appetizer. It was ok because I had good company and the server brought us some extra bread to nipple on. Overall it was a good experience and the food was very reasonably priced. I'll definitely be back more often.
- Pros: nice atmosphere, good prices
- Cons: don't really see any
Neither here nor there

Always packed on weekends, Murphy's has its location to thank, but little else. The food and the menu are always drab...you've been to these places before---nice locale, good crowd, lazy kitchen, long wait. Meh.
- Pros: Nice vibe
- Cons: Mediocrity
Worth the wait for brunch
by ATLFoodie
For some reason we always end up eating at the bar because we just can take the wait on a Sunday. If it wasn't just the two of us though, the wait would be worth it. The selection is varied, so if you feel like lunch and your partner feels like breakfast you have plenty of options. They make a tasty bloody mary!
- Pros: Food
- Cons: Waiting in line
A cozy spot for 2 will do!
by KeithKNOWS
I can't believe Murphy's has been around for over 25 years, amazing. That's a huge compliment, especially in the fickled restaurant business, ...enough already! Brunch at Murphy's is to die for, my specialty... egg white omelet, the food is always freshly prepared. It's the perfect spot for a romantic date for 2 or a secret rendezvous! Save room for scrumptious desserts. The restaurant offers an extensive wine list and an ambiance you won't forget! I guarantee you won't be disappointed, there's also valet parking.
- Pros: Valet Parking, perfect ambience, Superior Customer Service
