One of the best restaurants I've been to

by makkuo at Citysearch

My husband and I celebrated our anniversary there recently. The atmosphere was elegant. The waiter was knowledgeable about the menu and very friendly. The food was amazing! We ordered the fried cuttlefish as our appetizer. It was soft and tender and the batter was not too thick. For the main, we ordered the filet mignon. It was one of the best steaks I've ever had. It came with mashed purple potatoes, which was absolutely delicious!

  • Pros: Delicious food. Great atmosphere.
  • Cons: A little pricey.

wonderful secret of downtown atlanta dining

The name City Grille conjures up a pedestrian, diner like atmosphere. You can imagine the waitress sporting a pencil in the bun of her hair asking if you want ?mo' cawfee?. A diner it is not. City Grille is an elegant restaurant housed in a former Federal reserve Bank building. It is beautifully decorated with Italian marble, gorgeous chandeliers, and a grand staircase to the balcony, should you choose to dine there.

The lamb lollipops appetizer were superb, wonderfully seasoned and perfectly presented to my order of just slightly more cooked than medium.

I had the house salad vinaigrette that was just light and creamy enough to allow the flavor of the greens, tomatoes, and fried onions to come through. The hostess explained the differences between the 3 cheeses on the cheese plate. The tiny grapes and strawberries provided sweet bursts of flavor to contrast with the cheeses that my wife had.

My main course was the springer chicken, also delightfully seasoned, tender and moist thanks to its tomato broth base and vegetable accompaniment. All of the flavors complemented each other. Who knew that a simple chicken dish could be prepared so well? My wife had venison for the first time. As well prepared as this, served on a bed of orzo and colorful squash, it won't be the last.

Two desserts overwhelmed: the homemade cheesecake with raspberry glaze, and the decadent chocolate lava cake with vanilla ice cream. Forget the diet for once!

We must compliment John Paul our waiter. He was congenial, attentive and very knowledgeable about the menu. He gave us a tour of the kitchen before dinner along with the history of the restaurant which was fascinating. His service was excellent.

City Grille is an elegant place to dine and worth the cost.

  • Pros: informative wait staff, food preparation, elegant surroundings

Special event

by liza1706 at Citysearch

I recently hosted a rather large reception and dinner for our extended family and friends. I was originally going to to do this at home but decided to let the professionals do it instead. I was referred to Joey at City Grill by a colleague that I work with. I called Joey and explained what I was doing and he basically took it from there. He gave me a proposal for the menu and reassured me that all of the details would be taken care of and they were! I sent a deposit and just a few phone calls between us, no worries! My guests were totally Wowed by the elegance of the restaurant and the food and service were stellar. So, if you are planning to host a special event don't do it yourself, call Joey!

  • Pros: Using a Sales Manager to take care of the details
  • Cons: Getting everyone to go downtown

New favorite lunch spot

by jimbeard at Citysearch

I went in for lunch the other day to break the burger addiction. At first, the room is a bit intimidating compared to Burger King, but the smell from the wood grill welcomes you and as you settle into your seat you can almost imagine another world of sophistication(I recomend requesting the balcony for power lunches). Sergio was my waiter. He recomended the Tuna Nicoise and to my suprise I was able to enjoy my lunch and still make it back to work within my break(about 35 min). I did not have anything from the bar, but the wine list was presented and a wine pairing was offered. I did not need parking(I walked), but was offered validation in the adjacent deck. The only con would be the lemonade was a bit too sweet for my meal.

  • Pros: great for lunch
  • Cons: hard to read signage

City Grill

My husband took me to dinner there recently and we had a wonderful evening! We got engaged there a while back and the server remembered us! He selected wines for us paired with our appetizers and entrees and wow! was it good! We asked for some information about their private rooms and we were offered a tour and now are planning a dinner for my husband's company. This is a very special place!

  • Pros: professional and friendly service

Corporate Reception

by deankusinskiatlanta at Citysearch

My colleagues and I recently went to City Grill for a company dinner/reception in one of their private areas and all 60 of us were thoroughly impressed! The place was pretty crowded so I was somewhat hesitant about my very high expectations for this many people. Well, I did not need to worry a bit! Service was right on the money, drinks were refilled quickly and the appetizers were hot and tasty. Once we started the dinner the servers did not miss a beat. We had a 3 course dinner that was timed just right and the food was excellent. I usually dread dining with this many people but all of us are still talking about how much of a good time we had. I will definitely go back again!

  • Pros: Private dining areas, beautiful decor, old world elegance
  • Cons: Traffic during a convention

One of the best around!

by deanmeredithatlanta at Citysearch

I just love City Grill! It has old world glamour not found in too many of the "hip" places around town. Luckily, I get to go there often with my company for private dinners and luncheons. The staff is always attentive and the food is always top notch. I am actually going to have my wedding reception there in the fall. My fiancee did not want to even look anywhere else! I enjoy the quiet elegance and the personal service. More Atlantans should head downtown and check it out!

  • Pros: Attentive service, ambience, wine list
  • Cons: Parking options other than valet

Worst restaurant in Atlanta

by wwr at Citysearch

Wedding anniversary (05/16/06) and it was the worst food, the worst service and the nastied restaurant we have ever experienced. Was seated at chair that had broken leg, and had to locate waiter for replacement. Waiter placed chair over her head and sit it down without checking and walked away; the leather was in'shreds'. 2nd waiter was never available, had to request everything starting with service, even though there were only 3 tables of customers. Waiter knew nothing about the food. I wished we had known this before we spent $200. Unfortunately, We would NOT recommend this restaurant to ANYONE. Attempted many days to reach owner/manager (same as Dailey's) and she would never speak with me..some customer service?

  • Pros: none
  • Cons: worst food, service, cleanliness

The Worst "Restaurant" in the US

by forced_reg at Citysearch

Visited "city grill" last night (Saturday) and still can't get the taste out of my mouth. When you first walk in, impressive. The location is beautiful, no doubt but it all ends there. You should know if a restaurant is empty on a Saturday night at 8pm....there's a problem. I did love the bartender and our waiter but that does not make up for nauseating food. I'm not making this up, you could not eat the appetizer, entree...nothing. The short ribs were just a fat log that tasted like spoiled meat. My steak would never have been served at The Sizzler and my wife's lobster and shrimp were brown and looked like fake rubber food. We ate one bite of each serving and sent it back. The crab bisque soup...spoiled white fish pieces in heavy cream.

If you want to enjoy your evening....NEVER VISIT THIS RESTAURANT. BEWARE!!!!!!
