I think the Georgia NE Mountians are always beautiful but this time of year they are more than beautiful!! If you just drive and do not get out of the car it is still a fun and worthwild trip! Also you should eat @ the Smith House in Dahloaga square, it is excellent!

this is a great excursion for young kids 6-12 years old. The gold mines are really exciting and we even panned for gold and found a nice size nugget. Searching for semi precious stones was also alot of fun

Dahlonega is awesome... go & catch Gold Fever. If you want to go to the best attraction for the buck, skip over the more commercial Consolidated mine... it is very touristy & go to Crisson Gold Mine. Just a hop & skip up the road from Consolidated but well worth the extra 5 minute ride. Family atmosphere, real gold mine feel & look. Occasional mine tours & lots of expert advise from the locals & owners. Many Dahlonega regulars consider this their "best kept secret!"

Pros: Atmosphere, Inexpensive

North Georgia mountains have great hiking trails. Many of them are for intermediate hikers, so if you're looking for a challenging trail you have to search hard. The scenery is great and the trails are well marked. I think that there's a trail for everyone up there.

I have been to Dahlonega several times and I love it! Amicalola Falls is just a short drive away and summer and fall is the best time to go there. Even if you don't want to hike, it's nice just to be outside up there. It always amazes me that this beauty is only about an hour from the hustle and bustle of Atlanta! I also just went up to Brasstown Bald, the highest point in GA, and the views are spectacular! Then there is Helen, a little tacky, but very cute!

Pros: natural beauty, short drive

This is one of Georgia's prettiest places. There is tons to do in Dahlonega. My favorite thing is probably horseback riding in the fall up there. The small town atmosphere is also quite appealing. I would recommend this day-trip to anyone.

Editor's Review

A great getaway for scenic vistas and rustic digs, plus a helping of touristy kitsch.  See the full editorial review.
