Located on the edge of Decatur’s Downtown district, the Marlay House tempts neighborhood passer-bys with Irish pub grub and cozy confines. Sitting under towering trees, it’s a dark space that boasts sunken-in booths, a brick-walled patio and a no-frills attitude … exactly what you’d expect from an Irish-owned and operated joint. The menu lacks variety but shines in earnestness, offering the expected (bangers ‘n’ mash), the traditional (Irish stew) and the authentic (Celtic Scotch egg), without a gimmick in sight. So get a Guinness, settle in for a stay and appreciate the subtle comfort of…
Editor's Tips
- When to Go:
- Traditional live Irish music happens every Tuesday night, check their website for details.
- On the Menu:
- A sneaky-good option, the meat pie tastes like if beef from beef stew was doused in onion gravy, then cased in a pot pie crust.
- What to Drink:
- Is Guinness a little too heavy for you? Try a Kilkenny, from Kilkenny, Ireland. It’s an Irish brew that’s still has flavor but lacks the heaviness of a stout.
- Parking:
- There’s a small, free lot behind the restaurant. If that’s full look formetered street parking throughout Decatur.
- Where to Sit:
- Under the branches of overhanging trees, the patio is prime real estate for the social set.

The Grange is Great!
by localfoodlover
I went to the Grange for the first time on Halloween with my bestest friends and their 5, 3, and 1 yr old. While I am pretty sure they were not jumping for joy at our table, they never skipped a beat. the service was welcoming, attentive, friendly, absolutely outstanding. The menu was interesting and the prices were great for food and drinks. the fish and chips were great, and I got a Turkey Burger that was right on. We all left full, satisfied, and content. I came back again with my boyfriend a few weeks later and, again, had a great time. It was later, there was a great bar vibe, and again, the food was great. He got a salad of some sort which he loved and I got a turkey sandwich with (I think) brie and cranberry - something like that. Anyway it was something new I'd never tried and I enjoyed it. Although I haven't been back again - I keep looking forward to the next time I get a night off to go out to eat. I will chose The Grange!
- Pros: atmosphere, price
- Cons: parking seemed limited - we got a spot but I imagine it could be tough?
