The Manager Lies!!!!!! – I have never posted anything before about a resturant, but I have no choice but to let everyone know how horrible my service was about an hour and a half ago. Me and my children ages 2,3, and 10 went there for dinner and its 6.99 for children 9 and under( one trip only) More than enough for a 2 and 3 year old. I the adult does not want to eat because Mommy ate at her FAVORITE resturant RUSAN's right before we arrived at Chow Baby on Ponce. All (I) Mommy wanted was a Mojito( which was ok). So I ordered my 10 year old the 12.99 deal with multiple trips and I asked for 3 kids drinks. KEEP IN MIND Kids 9 & Under 6.99 (One trip only) is the only thing STATED on the menu about CHILDREN. I asked for my bill and it was 47 dollars and some change. Prior to receiving the bill I asked the manager about taken some food on my daughters behalf because she didnt like what I made for her on one of her trips. I tasted the food, mainly to convince my daughter that it was ok to eat. She didnt like it so Mommy pushed it aside......At that point I was making up in my mind to pay the extra five just to take the food my daughter was not going to eat. But the manager on duty made a BOLD statement and said ON OUR MENU IT STATES NO SHARING........I said I did not share I took a few bites. I ate before I came here that's why I only ordered a drink for myself. The manager the proceeded to agure with me because she wants to charge me 12.99 for a few bites of food I took on my daughter trips.......REALLY,REALLY!!!!!!! I then search the menu up and down to see what she was talking about and it was not there......Nor was it posted anywhere in the Resturant. The manager called the POLICE because at this point she didnt want to find in the menu what she had stated to me.......She could not because it does not exist. The other manager out of FEAR agreed with the lie that they say is on tape.......She took off the 12.99 and I paid a bill of 33.54 with a 5.00 tip for a waitress that CLEARLY did deserve it, because she thought it was ok to charge me for an adult drink when i asked for 3 kids drinks. I called back got the two managers names and the owners number and on the 16th of April when those two MANAGERS think I have forgotten I will be back up there...........RULE OF THUMB....TELL THE TRUTH!!!!!!! CHOW BABY SUCKS!!!!! Recently 2 friends and myself visited this restaurant. When we entered we noticed that some other co-workers were already there, so we sat at a separate table adjoining them. About 30 mins into our meal and while placing an order for a second round of drinks, we were abruptly and rudely interrupted by the manager Justin,who informed us that we had exceeded our 2 hour limit. When we tried to explain that we had not been there 2 hours, he very rudely informed us that it was their policy and since we joined the party who was there before us, that accounted for our time as well. We then informed him that we were not through with our meals and furthermore we had other orders pending. He notified us that we were welcome to finish up or meals at the bar, and after approx 5 mins going back and forth trying to reason with this manager, he threw his hands in the air and said "Bottom Line I Need This Table" There were no other patrons waiting , not to mention the fact that there were other vacant tables available. The attitude of this manager was very appalling,rude and obnoxious. He clearly Posessed zero PR skills. The end result was that we were forced to cancel our pending orders and pay our tabs which in my opinion equates to being thrown out of the restaurant.....I will NEVER visit this place again...From what I've seen on here, we were not the first ones to receive poor service, too bad I didn't read these reviews earlier. The overall service was so BAD, I can only think that any good reviews they received have been placed by members of their staff.
Delicious Asian Buffet – WOW, I wonder if they've gotten new management since the last reviewers ate there. I love Chow Baby! Yes, the valet parking is mandatory. I'm not sure why that's a problem? This isn't the first restaurant that I've been to that has that policy. The waiters were polite and explained the process clearly: you receive a wooden paddle with your table number (you write your name on it). You stick it in your black bowl, which you fill with your choice of rice, noodles, toppings, and sauces. You should use three scoops of rice and sauce. Then you fill a red bowl with meat. Everything is clearly labeled and someone came along while I was in line and cleaned up after the messy people in front of me. You leave your bowls and go back to your seat. Your meal is cooked and brought out to you. Rinse and repeat. You can take a bowl home with you for $5 extra which I always do because it heats up well. I love Chow Baby and will be bringing everyone I know there!
Ciao, Chow Baby. And good riddance. – I paid my first and last today visit to this relatively new eatery on Ponce de Leon. The food might be good, but even sheer gastronomic perfection couldn't make up for the the poor service and uncaring attitude of the owner and staff.
My wife and preschool-aged son arrived at the restaurant at approximately 5:30PM on a Friday afternoon. Fewer than half the tables were occupied and there were only a handful of people in line waiting to order. My wife and son took a seat at an unoccupied table to wait, and were told quickly and rather rudely by a server that it was not permitted to sit at a table until one has ordered. My wife informed the server that she was waiting for me, less than five minutes away, and that few tables in the restaurant were occupied. Nonetheless, the server insisted that my wife and young child stand up in a "waiting area" a few feet away.
A few minutes later, I pulled into the two-thirds empty parking lot and noted a sign reading "complimentary valet parking." I do not valet park, and let the attendant know that I was happy to tip him, but that I preferred to park in one of the many available open spaces myself. The valet informed me that the valet parking was compulsory. I indicated again I would be happy to tip him but that I would not be allowing anyone else to park my car. He rudely stated that I was welcome to go somewhere else for dinner, or park on the poorly-lit, alley-like street that runs behind the restaurant. I told him I would do the latter.
Upon entering the restaurant and learning about the poor treatment my wife and son had received, I immediately asked the hostess to speak with the manager. She went to fetch Chip, identified as the owner and manager, and a few minutes later he met us at the front of the restaurant. My wife explained her experience with the server. Chip immediately responded with an explanation about how, when it gets busy, there can be more people in line than there are tables available for and that practice is necessary to cut down on waiting time. I politely pointed out that it was 5:45PM and that fewer than half the tables were occupied, that there were very few people in line waiting to order, and that my wife had verified with my by phone that I was only a few minutes away. Chip stated he was sorry that happened, and immediately attempted to justify it having happend by repeating his explanation.
I then explained the situation with the valet. Chip first tried to say that the valets were operating independently, but quickly acknowledged that they were acting in accordance with policy at this and the other of the restaurant's locations. He then explained the challenges of operating a restaurant with so little parking. I again politely pointed out again that it was 5:45PM and the parking lot was less than half full. Chip once again explained the challenges of operating a restaurant with so little parking and made no apology for the valet's rude behavior.
At this point I asked him if he felt anything might have been done differently and whether he had any interest in addressing our concerns. He shrugged and was silent, at which point I thanked him for his time, indicated we would take our business elsewhere, and that I would share this experience with my friends and colleagues.
I have restaurant management experience, and do a fair amount of consulting work in the industry. Chip's arguments might have had merit a few hours later when the dinner seating started to pick up but were laughable given the early hour. Whether or not the arguments had merit at any time, Chip's disinterest and the rudeness of his staff was inexcusable.
I can't rate the food as I didn't stay to sample it, but give Chow Baby less than one star for its atrociously poor service.
First Experience at a Real Chow Baby – First time at The Real Chow Baby on PDL last nite. I have a plethera of concerns:
1: Workers behind the counter didn't speak English so when I asked if something was Water Chestnuts, she just stared at me. This could be dangerous if you're allergic to something.
2. I couldn't figure out what sauce was what. The names on the splash guard didn't line up with the containers below. Also, I'm short and had a hard time reaching sauces in the back.
3. Raw Meat! Contamination! Yuck! I'm funny about my meat. The counter in front of the meat was dirty and smeared which worries me that there are the juices from all those raw meats there. Once I'd gotten my chicken in the bowl I had chicken juice on my hands. I asked the girl at the counter if they had antibacterial wipes and I was told that the bathroom was around the corner. This is NOT the correct answer. When my waitress came to my table I asked her about this and was told that they usually leave a pump bottle of antibacterial gel there on the counter but they were out. HELLO! Kroger is right across the street. Go buy some! And is it right to have antibacterial gel that close to raw meat?!?!?!?! As for the girl at the counter that told me where the bathroom was, the excuse was she was just helping out from another location. What do they do at the other locations?!?!?! I think that they should have a worker fixing your meat bowl for you.
4. I made 2 small bowls of food and couldn't get the flavors right. Maybe make a list on the menu that says, "If you like this at you local chinese restaurant, mix XX sauce and YY sauce to get that flavor.
Overall, I won't be returning. The main reason is the way the meat is presented and the cleanliness overall. It's a nice concept but not for me.
