Tips for Rusto's Pizza

4.0
April 29, 2010

Fighting dirty in the Atlanta Pizza Wars. In the past year or so it seems like countless pizza joints have opened all around the city, each with its own take on the greatest food ever invented. But if you're like me, it's almost gotten to a point of pizza sensory overload. That's why when someone told me about Rusto's Pizza & Ice Cream, initially I was indifferent, but then I was like, "wait...pizza and what?" Pizza AND ice cream? Like at one place? Together? Very interesting. They say all is fair in love and pizza wars, so why not bring in a ringer, right?

The fact that Russell Wooten makes all his pies and ice creams fresh from 100% all natural ingredients isn't the only thing this place has going for it. They are environmentally conscious as well. Cokes are served by the can and you'll find a recycling depository in the corner when you're finished. Even the plastic cups they serve water in aren't really plastic. They are made of corn, but I wouldn't recommend trying to eat one!

So what about the food? Well the pizza is really good. I tried each of the three base pies - the margherita, the bianco, and the pesto-base. I wouldn't hesitate to order any of the three on a second visit and then customize from the list of standard toppings. I was there in a group of four and my only complaint is that each of our four small pizzas came out separately every 3-4 minutes. We were the only ones in the restaurant, so I have to wonder whether the kitchen is set up to serve a room full of customers on a busier day.

And finally, we tried the lemon pie and chocolate pudding flavored ice creams. They were both excellent, but I especially enjoyed the lemon.

Overall, I would recommend Rusto's. Good pizza isn't hard to find in Atlanta these days but the homemade ice cream and eco-friendliness make Rusto's worth a stop in.
