I was at hobnob on Wednesday Jan 18th for lunch for my first time with my boyfriend and can i saw Wow!!! When we came through the door we were greated with hellos and two very friendly gentlemen telling us we could have as seat anywhere,( which I like to feel like i have a choice in where i want to sit). No sooner had we sat down and our waiter came over and brought us menus and introduced himself as Dale. He told us what the specials where and what the drinks where. Unfortunately I had to be back at work so only a sprite for me and coke for my bf . He asked if it was our first time eating there and we said yes.He suggested that we get the beer pretzels or the mac and cheese since we had never been there before, We got the pretzels and omg they were heaven. If other people hadnt been in the restuarant i would have licked the bowl. He also told us about his favorites and we decided to go with two of his choices the short rib tacos and chicken tenders and both were excellent. The other guy working i guess was the bartender brought us our food was really nice too. Like 3 minutes after getting our food our waiter was back at the table to make sure everything was ok and if we needed anything and reminded us to save room for dessert. Can i say we wanted for nothing both guys were there making sure our drinks were full . I have been to nicer restaurant and paid alot more for food and not gotten service this good. Even when he brought us the check he told us to come back for dinner and get some of thier delicious pot roast. And iI/we will be back most definitely. It bugs that people have bad things to say about this place cause I dont think i would have stopped by if I had looked at this site first. But I'm glad I/we stopped by. The only thing i didnt like to much is the fact that the valet guy seemed a little tweaked out. I almost didnt feel comfortable leaving my keys.

Great location and feel but aweful.
As a big fan of Gilbert's I have been very excited to see the owners open up a new location. I really like the look of the place and besides parking being a little hectic it is a great location. The worst thing (and one of the most important things!!) is the service. The bar tenders on almost every visit have been borderline rude. My last visit was Monday January 2, a busy day and for most people the last day off before starting 2012. Our server, who acted like he wanted to still be at The Eagle, was so azazingly rude we almost left after his introduction. We were a table of 6 and we were all very saddened that lunch wasn't gonna be as fun as we had hoped. Other problems occured like my medium rare burger coming out so rare it was still cold!! I very carefully asked for the burger to be cooked more but mr. personnality told me being I had bit into it it could not be put back on the grill. Made total sense to me but it then appeared the only solution was for them to make a new burger. The server told me I need to be more careful in the future oredering meats medium rare.... to which I told him I am quite careful and that the burger, as agreed by my entire party, was RARE boreder line no cooked at all. In the end I was prepared another burger and it came out cooked just fine.
With all this said I think we just got the guy on a bad day... My problem than lies with the mangement. How could they not notice in such a small establishment that one of their 3 servers was being a butt to his tables?? I do like the place and the food, when prepared as ordered , is very good. It all lies/lays in the service. I am at a point now that Hobnob is not a place we are going to have as a choice to dine at, and that is unfortunate for Hobnob cause we eat out a lot. Be really nice to see this problem fixed. Such potential!!!!!
Pay Overtime, HOBNOB. Please pass on: If you dine at Hobnob Neighborhood Tavern or Gilbert's Mediterranean Cafe, you should be aware that they have been stealing from their employees since opening. From the minimum wage earners that seat you, serve you, and cook your food, they have illegally withheld the overtime compensation that is rightfully theirs. And now - despite being caught red handed - they are stalling reim...bursing. No fines, mind you. The Department of Labor doesn't bother seeking fines. They are stalling simply paying back, interest free, the money they stole from employees. If you dine there, please stop. But also call or Facebook message or post on Yelp or whatever your preferred method is and let them know that you will not support a company that steals from its employees. And please, pass this on.
After driving by Hobnob several times in the past, I finally decided to give it a try for dinner. Big mistake. The service wasn't very good. The waiter seemed to be in a hurry to rush my group out the door. The food was awful. I ordered a sandwich and fries. The fries were below average. The sandwich wasn't terrible, but I ended up spending most of the next 24-36 hours in the bathroom.
Overall, I suppose I'll give Hobnob one star--mainly because this site won't allow me to give them zero.
Pretzels and Warm Beer Cheese Dip.
So after weeks of hearing from many people how great HobNob was, I decided to go give it a try for lunch. On the corner of Piedmont and Monroe, HobNob has turned the former Starbucks into a cozy and upbeat restaurant with a great atmosphere. The menu consists of snacks which include bar nuts, oven roasted tomato and garlic hummus, and soft pretzels with warm cheese dip. They also feature "neighborhood noshes" such as chipotle cornmeal crusted fried green tomatoes, shrimp and grits, chicken wings, Belgian endive boats, fish and chips, and many more other options. I tried out HobNob for lunch and was torn between the HobNob's slow roasted pork sandwich or the lamb burger. The waitress told me both were very popular but persuaded me on the pork sandwich since she said it tasted like sweet North Carolina barbeque. Since my family is from North Carolina, I was sold while also giving it some high expectations. My friend ordered the special burger of the day - the 3 cheese burger featuring beer cheese. Beer cheese? I never heard of such a thing!
The food came out and wow was the presentation appealing. Big portions (probably enough to share if you have the will power to only eat half of some incredible food). The pork sandwich was exactly like I had expected, sweet North Carolina barbeque! It reminded me of my younger days when my family and I would roadtrip up to Hickory, North Carolina and stop at all those amazing barbeque places off the highway. Great flavor and the perfect amount of sauce. I hate when restaurants drench your sandwich with sauce and you don't get to really taste the pork. HobNob's pork sandwich was great and I would highly recommend it! My friend got the burger and I tried a bite. The actual flavor of the burger was amazing. This burger standed out to me from some other places I have tried because it was rich with flavor. It didnt need any toppings or accessories, it was rich and full of flavor itself.
We then learned that the special dessert for the day was Strawberry Cobbler. You should have seen my face light up when I learned this. I rarely find strawberry cobbler anywhere and I am obsessed! So of course, I told myself I would work out later to make myself feel better about it(Even though I probably won't) and we ordered it. OMG, thats seriously all I have to say. Sweet vanilla icecream on top of a crusty topping and fresh (and I mean really fresh) strawberries. Wow, I don't even know what to say.
I would definitely recommend HobNob for you to try. I don't eat at many fancy schmancy restaurants so I truly love when I find a place like this that is affordable and has great beer and great food. Seriously what else could you possibly want? HobNob also features dollar hotdogs as well as other special menu items at midnight!
(Side note: If you do try HobNob, apparently you have to try the Chocolate Stout milkshake with Left Hand Stout, Vanilla Extract, Vanilla Icecream, and Chocolate Sauce. It was highly recommened by many people but since I do have to go back to work, I'll have to save that one for another day!)
pretzels and milkshakes.. I like finding restaurants that do one or two things well enough to where I just crave the hell out of them. I've only been to Hobnob twice, but they've got me hooked on their pretzels and milkshakes. I know, it's a weird combination and I'm not saying you need to order them together, but they're dynamite. The pretzels come with this beer-cheese dip, that tastes a little like queso, if queso wasn't Mexican. The pretzels have this sort of wonderful aftertaste that brings you back to your days at Gwinnett Place Mall when hitting Pretzel Time was the highlight of your week. It's that good in a guilty way. As for the milkshakes, the main reason why I like them is that they incorporate beer into the shake. Which, on the surface seems off-putting, but their chocolate stout shake tastes like stout beer was invented to eventually become this wonderful, boozy concoction. Great bar food, great location.
A Good, Comfortable Neighborhood Joint in Midtown.
Hobnob has an interesting & almost eclectic menu. It’s a mixture of pub/bar staples (wings, burgers, soft pretzels), with some comfort food classics mixed in (chicken pot pie, pot roast, mac & cheese) & rounded out with some unique & creative dishes (braised short rib & lamb pizza, pork & collard greens spring rolls).
So lets start off with the highlights:
From an appetizer perspective, the house made soft pretzels served w/ a warm cheese & beer dip was crazy good! The pretzel itself is a sublime mix of sweet, buttery & salty. It’s served hot, is nice & soft & truly is everything a great pretzel should be. It was great just on its own, but dipped in the beer & cheese dip & damn!
Hobnob has THE BEST chicken pot pie I’ve had in my life. What made this pot pie stand out from every other one I’ve had was the chicken. Hobnob house smokes their chicken over hickory wood & wow is it good. I absolutely love smokey foods & hobnob uses that angle to put a simple but incredibly tasty spin on a comfort food classic.
Hobnob also offers a few pizzas on their menu. The best of which is the braised short rib & lamb pizza w/ garlic confit & crumbled goat cheese. This pizza was delicious & more of a gourmand meat lovers pie. It has a great meatiness from the lamb & the short rib, but then you get a taste of the garlic confit & your bite is complimented by a really nice but mellowed garlic essence. The chevre is a nice finish, adding a bit of creaminess to your bite & pairing nicely with the meat.
The pan roasted trout served over buttermilk mashed potatoes, with a candied pecan butter sauce, & topped w/ a red onion marmalade was another winner. It’s a preparation that you’ve likely seen on a menu before, but Hobnob executes on it almost flawlessly. Nice creamy, buttery & really flavorful mashers, a well cooked piece of fish that isn’t overpowering in its flavor, topped with the slightly sweet pecan sauce & then perfectly complimented with the red onion marmalade. The marmalade provided just the right amount of acidity & flavor.
As enjoyable as these dishes were, there were a few low points to Hobnob as well. Maybe I’m too harsh a critic, but in this day & age it is pretty much unacceptable in my opinion for any reputable restaurant to serve frozen fries; which Hobnob does. So the Poutine Gravy Fries were a big disappointment for me. The fries are served topped with a house made brown pepper gravy & some salted mozzarella cheese curds, but I just couldn’t get past the frozen fries, so the dish did nothing for me.
The southern spring rolls were also a bit of a disappointment. They’re a southern twist on an Asian staple; filled with slow roasted pork & braised collard greens & served w/ a cherry mustard marmalade sauce. The dish sounds interesting & so I was excited to try it, but it was a bit disappointing in terms of flavor. There just wasn’t enough pork flavor coming through & thus the acidity of the greens took over & dominated the dish.
The prosciutto & arugula pizza was also a disappointment as it was overpoweringly salty. I love both prosciutto & salt, but this pie simply didn’t work. I get that the saltiness of the prosciutto is supposed to be balanced & offset by the pepperiness of the arugala, but it just didn’t work. It was literally like eating a salt lick.
There were two other dishes that while good, just didn’t stand out from any other variation I’ve ever had. They were the pot roast & the pork shank. These dishes weren’t bad you understand, they were fine, its just something that I’ve had plenty of times before & there wasn’t anything that I thought stood out about Hobnob’s versions.
So all in all, I liked Hobnob & would definitely go back. There were just a few too many misses for me to give Hobnob a 4, but what the place does well, they do very well. I recommend you check it out.
Cozy neighborhood pub has their priorities straight..
Straddling the corner of Monroe and Piedmont, Hobnob took over a former Caribou Coffee, kept the cozy vibe and added a patio that begs for good weather. Living up to their watering hole moniker, craft beer gets Porter-like attention and the cuisine interweaves drinking favorites and comfort staples. It’s the type of menu that will please both your college-bound brother and hyper-critical neighbor. Soft pretzels come with a beer-cheese sauce that’s dunk-worthy of anything within grabbing distance while well-executed burgers and pizza satisfy buzz-happy cravings. Dinner entrees embrace the same comforting idea but remove the bar food factor. A bone-in, braised pork shank comes marbled and melty while crispy seared trout is accompanied with wonderfully-heavy, garlic mashed potatoes. For dessert, don’t miss the mezzaluna, which is basically puffy pizza dough laced with Nutella and topped with candied pecans.
Give it the Hob-nod. To Hobnob is to drink socially. Perfect. Relax and participate in "Hobnobery" in a cozy new spot on the corner of Piedmont and Monroe. Calming and warm lodge decor and a southern menu thats as flamboyant as its "Mansley Mall" address.
New watering hole offers versatility and incredible pretzels.
I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to sample a plethora of menu offerings at Hobnob during my first visit, and I definitely left impressed. When I go back again, here's what I know for sure - I'll start with the soft pretzels with beer cheese dip. What happens after that- who knows? Out of everything I tried, perhaps the most simple snack of them all stood above the rest. I also really enjoyed the southern spring rolls and the poutine gravy fries. It's just a shame for them that they have to share space on the menu with those pretzels.
As for the main entrees, my favorites were the pork shank and the hanger steak. The pizzas were OK, but I think Hobnob succeeds more with their fancied up southern inspired dishes. The chicken pot pie was also a big hit at the table.
My one regret is that I did not get the chance to try one of their boozey milk shakes, but I can't complain too much - the Nutella Mezzaluna was outstanding.
I was also impressed with how they've utilized the space of what had been a Caribou Coffee. I think Hobnob has the location and built-in versatility to be a destination for a night out OR as a pre-gaming stop prior to a trip to the Highlands, Midtown, or just across the street to Smith's Olde Bar.
