Editorial Review for Straits – by Jonathan Baker
In Short
Looming over Juniper like an old-Hollywood Frank Lloyd Wright house, Straits' hardwood ceilings and origami-shaped lamps accent an angular design that pops with detail. Inside is a dark and chic scene; two stories every bit of as cool as the Grammy-winner behind its inception. More Pan-Asian than Singaporean, authenticity is delicately sprinkled into the mainstream menu. Kung Pao lollipops are bone-in and sopping with a dark gingery-plum glaze and the Ikan Pangang (salmon) is soft and sauced, wrapped eloquently in a banana leaf. It's a menu and setting that a gourmand will like, and suburban friends will gush over.

I have dined several times at Straits. The first time, my sister and I were thrilled to try Luda's new spot. Plus, I live in just walking distance. Despite, our waitress taking at least 15 minutes to even acknowledge that we were there and take our drink orders. The "undress" a delicious champaign cocktail and the "red head in bed" a fantastic muddled strawberry martini was worth the wait. We started with the chicken lollipops, which were delicious. Then we had the Oragami Sea Bass, which simply melted in my mouth. In addition, we had a awesome green seafood curry dish. The second time, we were recommended to sit at the bar. The bar was a totally different experience. We had the time of our lives, I had brought 4 of my girlfriends which were visiting from out of town to check out the "new spot." When we arrived, the bar was packed with people and the music was blasting with a DJ, the atmosphere was great. Our bartenders were awesome. the first bartender was a very talkative yet informative fellow by the name of CS. CS had recommended a few delicious appetizers and cocktails for my friends and I. As the food came out, we were automatically distracted by our second bartender. He was this gorgeous asian man by the name of Fern, my friends and I were hoping he was our dessert!!! The bartenders were awesome! They were very attentative, informative, funny and made great drinks. We were also plesantly surprised, when Luda himself was there. He took the time to introduce himself and thank us for coming out, which was awesome. Since the first time, my friends and I have made it a ritual to dine at the bar at least once a week.
Pros: awesome atmosphere and bar staff
Cons: wait staff

My friends and I decided to visit this restaurant because of the Midtown Restaurant Week. Well the $25 menu was awful so we decided to order from the regular menu. There was a vast variety of items to choose from. We ordered three small plates to begin with. And we each ordered an entree, the lemongrass beef, the seafood risotto, and the origami sea bass. They encourage you to share but the portions are not large enough, especially if its more than two people.
Pros: Variety of food to choose from
Cons: Prices
