Editorial Review for 4th & Swift – by Jonathan Baker

In Short
Hidden in the back pocket of the Old 4th Ward, this former Southern Dairies engine room is a charming backdrop for comfort-guru Jay Swift's namesake restaurant. Worn brick walls are cooled with industrial elements and striking white tones. An original dairy valve, brightly painted fire-engine red, is the lone splash of color. Rathbuns-like simplicity works itself into the farm-fresh menu, a one sheet of specials stacked atop a page of seasonal items. Light and loosely put together, the appetizer lasagna is accented by shredded lamb shoulder and housemade ricotta. The fun-to-say, fun-to-eat "Three Little Pigs" entree is a trio of swine staples: medium-rare tenderloin, handmade sausage and buttery-soft belly. A comforting side of mac and cheese is dusted with cracker crumbs and sneaks goat cheese in the mix for added bite. Well beyond their youthful complexion, the service is prompt and knows its food-obsessed audience, suggesting the right dessert (creme puffs) right on cue.

Insider Tips

What to Drink

The Old 4th Ward cocktail (made with a lethal lemonade-whiskey combo), like the neighborhood, looks tough but goes down smooth.

Know Before You Go

The entrance to the restaurant is a little tough to spot; 4th and Swift is located directly across from the police-filling station on North Avenue.

Parking

Don't risk your car on a side street to save a few bones--that is what the valet is for.

I thought 4th and swift was good, but not great. The food was very good, but perhaps a little overpriced. I have had food as good or better but with cheaper prices. I feel that you are paying more for the atmosphere, which I felt was lacking. This restaurant is in a old factory, which was loud and drafty. Worth a try, but there are better restaurants in atlanta.

Pros: Food

Cons: Ambiance

Highly recommend this restaurant! I recently ate here with a group of friends and had a wonderful time! The waitress was very attentive and gladly answered all of our questions about the menu. No one was ever without water or wine and during the meal both the manager and chef came over to make sure everything was to our liking. The food was wonderful...butternut squash soup was delicious as well as the scallop dish with pumpkin risotto. We had a later reservation and were the last table to leave but never felt rushed through our coffee and desserts. Good for groups or a couple looking for a good date spot. Will definitely go back again and recommend to others!

Pros: Food, Valet parking, Friendly staff

Cons: none
