Basement Ballin'. This basement of the The Highland Inn is a catch-all of the Poncey, eclectic crowd. Random nights of rodeo thems, tiki hula hoop competitions, to indie band, or electric cello players. Either way, it's always a different night from whatever your routine has been stuck in. Hop down the stairs and say hello to your new favorite heavy handed bar keepers.
Great Semi-Secret Spot in Poncey-Highland. While the Ballroom Lounge of the Highland Inn is not quite a secret, its dingy-chic meets vintage style (i.e. black and white tile, old furniture, and decayed grandeur vibe) offers libations and badass music events for a fraction of the price bars that try to re-create the same "effortless" vibe charge. Mega cheap High Life, generous pours of Jack 'n' ginger, loosen up an excellent mix of folks including ex-fratboys, hipsters and that cute tatted up girl you saw at the Majestic the weekend before. Make sure to attend a late night 60's dance party complete with wall projections of weirdo films, or for a low key jazz night during the week.
fun times!. I held my wedding reception here and we all had a blast. The astmosphere is really unique. Don't come here expecting that modern industrial vibe; it's a throwback to the jazz age with tiled floors and ceilings and mismatched couches. You almost feel like you need a cloche hat and a secret password to come in. I still get compliments on how neat the space was. The bartenders (hired by the Highland Inn staff so I assume they work there regular nights as well) made us anything we asked for and didn't skimp.
It is not free cover but not much. Cover was five bucks. For live bands and cheap drinks you can not beat it. Schlitz, PBR, and Highlife....nuff said.
Lodged in the bowels of the historic Highlight Inn, this loungy basement bar attracts Va-Hi locals with live music and nightly drink specials.
In Short
The Virginia Highland neighborhood doesn't have a lot of secret dives, but housed in the basement of an artist-laden boutique hotel, the Highland Inn Ballroom Lounge fills the void. The side door merely reads "open," and the dimly lit, cavernous club gets more character from its low ceilings and worn-in couches. Live jazz bands play on the weekend while connect four and chess encourage drunken intellectual games. Going against the neighborhood norm, beverages are poured stiff without the heavy Highlands price tag.
