Tips for Toscano & Sons Italian Market

South Philly Revisited. I read a thing on CitySearch about this place. Being from Camac Street in Philadelphia, I had to go, just to see if Atlanta got "Italian market" better than it got "cheese steaks" - the answer is YES.

It's going to take a while for this place to build up an inventory, but what they do have is the real deal. For a real treat, slide on back to the deli counter (back left corner) and have one of the best panino in Atlanta.

Spec Italian goods + great sandwiches. I rarely find time to cook, but when I do I like to go all out. I'd rather hit a farmers market than Publix, or a specialty wine spot (like Castleberry's Wine Shoe) than Green's. Being married to an Italian, I can't exactly get away with the Prego n pasta route. Thankfully Toscano and Sons makes the shopping as much fun as the cooking. And not only do they have cans of san marzano tomatoes and imported olive oils and Italian candy, but they have bang-on sandwiches that I can't resist. While their solid supply of house cured meats and blocks of cheese definitely helps the panini's stand out, what makes these sandwiches so good is the bread. It's magically crispy outside but soft and chewy on the inside. And they're a pretty hefty portion for the small price of $4.50!

Italian market gets fancy for the Westside.. Combine an old-world Italian market with a modern-day Atlanta neighborhood grocery, mix in a dash of West-End/Marietta Street flare and the result is Toscano and Sons. Carrying all sorts of imported Italian labels, this market also includes a great number of Italian meats, cheeses, mixes, and pastas. In the back there are refrigerated items to take home and heat up as well as a Panini counter. The best sammie selections are the Toscano with arugula, soppressata and fontina cheese or the spicy salami-laden Genoa. The best part about this joint is the inspiration that even the casual cook gets out of visiting. The smells and products you won’t find at Publix are worth the trip.
