What People Are Saying About Thrive

In Short – One can only hope this downtown gem lives up to its name. Popular with locals and conventioneers alike, it morphs each day from SoNo power lunch spot to an elegant modern dinner and lounge option. Late night brings a young and beautiful crowd to sample the specialty cocktails. The menu is flexible, too, with everything from sashimi to free-range roast chicken to burgers, all well-executed.

I am boycotting Thrive.

by smillic at Citysearch

I work in the same building as Thrive so I have been there countless times over the past 2 years. The lunch sandwiches are decent (salmon being the best) however the food is definitely nothing to rave about. The service is actually what prompted my boycott. Almost every time I dine in at Thrive it takes forever for my food to come and the waiters never seem apologetic or concerned. The last (and final) time I was there we waited for 30-40 minutes before our lunch arrived and the manager ended up giving us our meal free after we complained. I wouldn't make the drive downtown to eat here.

  • Pros: The salmon sandwich is great.
  • Cons: The service is terrible! The lamb sandwich is inedible.

Thrive

Went here today for lunch and it was actually very good. I like the space very much, although the design itself has the risk of being very dated very soon.

The edamame was, well, eda-YUMMY! Really, really good - I liked that it was out of the pod and very spicy with chunky pieces of salt that tasted almost sweet - very unique and delicious.

Sushi was OK - I enjoyed it, but it was very much like sushi I've had a million other places.

I would definitely go back, if only for the edamame.

  • Pros: nice room, decent service

Avoid, Avoid, Avoid

My cousin and I went to Thrive as a part of restaurant week. The menu was fixed so there was no opportunity to order from the regular menu - even for those who did not wish to participate in the restaurant week promotion. I had the chicken potstickers, scallops and liquid chocolate dessert and my cousin had the calamari, chicken and kiwi/strawberry dessert. We ordered martinis. It took more than 30 minutes for the appetizers to come and in the meantime my cousin saw an insect swimming in her drink. I told our waiter and he looked down and said "Oh there is one in your drink too"! He returned with fresh drinks and cocktail napkins to place over them. We spent the rest of the night covering our drinks and waving off the fruit flies (or whatever they were) that were swarming all over the restauraunt. None of the food was good. The calamari had an aftertaste, the potstickers tasted like old beef, the chicken was bland, my scallops were overdone and they ran out of my dessert. There was nothing pleasant about the experience. I honestly left feeling the need for mouthwash, a shower and a phone call to the health inspector. Ugh. Don't go. Given the number of flying critters, I was not even tempted to try the sushi. (shudder)

  • Pros: Drinks were well made
  • Cons: Aside from the drinks, nothing else was acceptable
