Editorial Review for Five Guys Burgers & Fries – by Jonathan Baker

In Short
The ketchup and mustard colored decor is a quick sign of simplicity for this hardly-a-chain burger spot. An open air kitchen exposes the cooked-to-order action and hard-shell peanuts allow you to snack tableside while your order is prepared. The burgers come fat, buns are toasted and all the toppings are free. Fries are hand cut and plentiful--reminiscent of the Varsity--but can be dusted, Cajun-style. Don't look for chicken sandwiches and salads-just come for what got them there--burgers, dogs and fries.

Know Before You Go

Unlike its west coast superior, In-n-Out burger, there are unfortunately no Milkshakes at Five Guys.

This place is so good that I'll drive past at least a dozen other burger joints to go here. I even have their number programmed in my phone so I can call in my order ahead of time, a practice I recommend, especially around dinner time.

My husband and I tried Five Guys on our way to Lowe's this past Saturday. I love fresh cut french fries, and this place has perfected the art of the pomme fritte! Orders are huge, we got the regular and had plenty for two of us. We ordered the cajun style, so the fries were dusted with a delectable, slightly spicy seasoning mix. Fries were perfectly crisp on the outside and soft in the middle. They fry in 100% peanut oil, which really adds to the taste. Hubby had a small cheeseburger which was a good size for one person. I had a hot dog which was a 7.5 out of 10. Big plus -- all toppings are free and they have about a dozen to choose from. If you love fries, try Five Guys!

Pros: free peanuts in the shell while you wait, clean

Cons: none
