“The place itself wasn't as nice as I expected, so not ideal for a romantic night out - but great for casual food or dinner out before hitting the bars.”
“Pozole is THE BEST place in the city for tequila, margaritas, tapas, entrees, tacos, and desserts BY FAR!”

“for one love the favor that they add to the already delicious Pozole tacos.”
“We usually start with the chips and flavorful variety of salsas.”

A bit of a hidden gem, Pozole is tucked behind Highland Avenue and features some awesome Guacamole!
Cheerful cantina adds a pleasing dash of Latin flavor to the Highlands..
The Scene
In the space that once housed Surin's Thai Bowl, Pozole is a welcome addition to the Virginia-Highland's vibrant restaurant scene. The rejuvenated space is festively decorated with tequila bottles, modern dangling lights and colorful art. The boisterous atmosphere attracts a mix of dates, groups and young families who are in good hands with hip, accommodating servers.
The Food
The menu, described as Nuevo Latino, is full of flavor and perfect for sampling or a full meal. A comforting hominy soup called pozole is offered as a starter along with a selection of small plates, such as mussels swirled in a cilantro tequila sauce. Tacos hit the spot with stuffing choices of tilapia, pork and beef brisket. Entrees are heavier, but well worth a try, especially the braised beef short ribs, cooked in a sweet mole sauce and served over creamy corn grits with bits of Oaxaca cheese.
Wonderful experience!. I live in the local area of Pozole, and kept putting off visiting.....not really a tequila fan. But I decided to try it finally. WOW!! Had I been missing out! I entered the door and the lovely hostess was all smiles, very welcoming. She sat us promptly. Our waitress, Lauren, took great care of us. Even Todd, the manager, came by to see how we were.....that's always a plus! Anyway, we ordered the "perfect" margarita, tacos, and dessert. All which were splendid. (I even had two margaritas!!!) The beef tacos ruled our night! My experience with the staff and food definately said a lot about the restaurant as a whole. I like to see people who care about food and service! Thank you and I will be back a bunch!!!!
Tapas???. I am shocked that many people rate this place high. I thought this place is more of a bar than a restaurant. Meaning they make profit off of drinks not the crappy food they serve. I have been to REAL tapas and this is not even close.
Great food & service. I've only been to Pozole a couple of times but that's enough to say I love this place. It's very small and cozy inside and the menu offers a lot of different options- small plates & taco plates which are very affordable and entrees which are a little more pricey. Love the salmon and blue corn fritters and my husband loved the brisket tacos. The tuna was nothing to write home about but I still ate every bit of it. Good mojitos and great service, we loved our server David. Will keep going back.
Great tapas, affordable, great location!.
Pozole really does have some of the best margaritas in town - even the house margs are hard to beat! Service was a little slow once we were seated and there weren't enough space heaters on the patio - but once we got the servers attention she was great! Very good food, good selection, and very affordable for what you get. The beef brisket tacos were really impressive. The place itself wasn't as nice as I expected, so not ideal for a romantic night out - but great for casual food or dinner out before hitting the bars.
The only downside was letting people smoke in the restaurant - it somewhat spoiled to meal - perhaps keep that until after 10:30pm or later.
Fun!. Great, inexpensive food and friendly staff combined with killer margaritas. Try the "perfect" - it really is.....
Great Pomegranite Margarita's, Excellent Gucamole and Rah- Rah!. We have to admit, Jen Soong's, CitySearch, review was on target. But much to our surprise, Pozole, is more a Cantina, that other upscale Highland destinations. We didn't know if we were in Athen's, Clemson, but it was obvious, the hometown team had one. It was packed with twenty and early thirty Friday nighters, getting fired up for the clubs later. My good friend, and myself made our way to the bar, and ordered us a south of the border concoction. I started with a very tasty Mango Mojito, and she got a terrific Pomegrante Margarita, with shaved ice. My next drink was one of those terrific pom-marg's. Oh goodness! App's were a good gucamole and Chile con Queso. Small plates, and limited entree's are the fare here. My companion had the combo Green Mole Enchilades, withy the mole on the side, phobia of anything hotter than ketchup or mayo. I had the Mole Roasted Duck Tostada, where's the duck, and a tasty crabcake over Jicima Slaw. We can't wait until warm weather, when the covered patio is open, and have several rounds of thos pom-marg's and guac. And then on to someplace else in the Highlands for our entree's. Much fun! Rah-Rah!
Over-rated. I heard a lot about this place and I was excited to try it out; however it was an underwhelming experience. I recommend the queso dip and guacamole, but both of my taco choices (one tilapia and the other with potatoes, cheese, and peppers) were not apetizing. Also the dining atmosphere was unimpressive.
food & atmosphere = fresh. Being from the southwest I have high standards and I have to say I like this place. The margaritas aren't outstanding (don't like the watered down effect from the snow cone ice)...stay away from the mango one...but the non-flavored margaritas ON THE ROCKS are good. The tacos and calamari were great. My boyfriend (the culinary snob) and I thought the mussels were some of the best and most unique we've ever had. This place is always busy and bouncing at night with beautiful people. Don't go expecting a quiet dinner and be prepared to wait...but the servers are very nice and always try to be accommodating. Until a Rubios or La Salsa makes it across the country I'll be eating here!
Not nearly as good as expected, very disappointed in food. Pozole has recently been getting rave reviews from other local Highlanders, but I don't know why. The food was way too spicy, so much so that my girlfriend couldn't eat it and I couldn't taste any flavor. Drinks were good, though overpriced. I'll not go back for dinner - maybe for a drink.
