A Fresh Taste in Indian Cuisine

  • Party Room Available

Midtown Manhattan gets a new flavor in Indian cuisine with Mint. Owner Gary Sikka, who besides being a successful businessman, is a chef with 18 years of culinary experience has created an Indian restaurant that celebrates the food of the North and the South, and presents it in a way that today's dining public relates to. The 110 seat restaurant is decorated brightly with orange, red, and fuscia drum lights snuggled together throughout the long dining room, and painted panels of mint, yellow, and green that hang over striped banquettes. There is a semi-private room complete with audio video equipment that seats 12. The definition of mint is "an aromatic refreshing herb that serves as a central ingredient in accompaniment sauces in Indian cuisine." Gary Sikka is taking great pride in bringing NY an exemplary dining experience presented in a tranquil and exhilarating atmosphere.

Editorial Review for Mint – by Katie Heffernan

The Scene
Pools of color wash this Midtown restaurant in a contemporary Indian aura. Magenta and orange drum lamps cover the ceiling, and a mint green glow flushes the walls. The few traditional touches--woven placemats, pillowed banquets and tapestries--barely surface, but it's enough to even out the upbeat energy of streaming Bollywood pop.

The Food
The regional menu rests in limbo between tradition and the 21st century, with a transitional character that sometimes falters. Vegetable samosas arrive small, perfectly triangular and pleasantly light and airy. A distinct sauce covers mussels porial, the chili-packed southern starter deserving of its spicy title, though the bone-in goat rogan josh's masala is mild and not fully matured. While flavored rices and rosemary naan sound enticing, you'll be just as happy with the regular basmati and breads. Follow the same rule of thumb with desserts, where names like "exotic carrot illusion" do not pay off.

Party of 10? Reserve the private back room, sealed off by a shimmery drape and concealing private audio-visual equipment. Party of one? Saddle up to the bar and order from their specialty martini and cocktail menu.

What to Drink

An interesting selection of wine is offered at reasonable prices--from excellent bottles of Turley to satisfying bargain accompaniments like the $27 Domaine de Montvac Cotes du Rhone.

I love Mint - it is one of my 3 favorite Indian restaurants in the city. The food is delicious - not too bland (I usually get spicy), and not too heavy. I highly recommend this place for fine dining. It is a bit pricey, and the ambience is good but a bit dark. I wish it was closer to my place so that I could get frequent delivery.

Pros: Yummy food, not too heavy

Cons: Ambience a bit dark but good

The food here is incredible, the service is also very professional. The drinks are so so, and the decor is more upscale. Will definitely be back!
