Editorial Review for Com Vietnamese – by Florence Byrd

The Scene
Once inside this jewel box of a restaurant, you discover a hip, energetic spot bustling with friendly servers and happy patrons. Gauguin-esque paintings of domestic Vietnamese scenes decorate the ruby-red walls, but the real eye candy are the platters of sizzling grilled meats which servers shuttle nimbly from kitchen to table.

The Food
It's nearly impossible to make a bad choice here. A shredded apple and green papaya salad, tossed with savory bits of chicken and sprightly vinaigrette, interplays spicy, sweet and sour. Grilled duck la lot (grape leaves) arrive on a bed of salad tossed with the same vinaigrette with a kick. Rice vermicelli topped with pan-fried beef, accompanied by a glistening mountain of fresh herbs and vegetables, can be wrapped in lettuce leaves and dipped in spicy fish sauce. A variety of delicious spring rolls come filled with fresh veggies and chewy rice noodles.

The Extras

They don't advertise them, but off-the-menu specials like whole grilled fish are usually available. Ask your server about them.

What to Drink

Didn't know there was such a thing as Vietnamese beer? It's called 33, and it's similar to light Japanese beers like Asahi.

too "Americanized" our waitress said, This is an American-friendly place. Unlike the other places up Buford Hwy fr here -- "scary" -- eg, dirty, eg, menus don't have enough English on them. yuk! that's all I needed to hear! Com is made for people who like Disneyland -- ie, who want a sugar-coated "ethnic dining experience." My friend & I ordered: 1) chkn curry -- all liquid -- like SOUP! with a few chunks of chkn sitting in it. and 2 or 3 tiny chunks of sweet potato. and a lot of fat globules -- high calorie? hot? Spicy, yes, good. But temp -- lukewarm at best. 2) lamb w/ rice vermicilli noodles.-- ok. but it was crying out for A TON of veggies, ... and yet ... there were hardly ANY! WTF! just a couple of token slivers. -- onion or something? how yummy this dish would have been with a heap of steamed veggies added -- zucchini, carrots, potatoes, green beans,... sheesh, ANYthing! Flavor itself of our 2 dishes -- fine. But we were appalled at the BLATANT LACK OF VEGETABLES. also -- other Vietnamese restaurants we have eaten at -- have brought us a large platter of leafy greens, we call them "weeds" -- to accompany our meal. The only accoutrement we got at Com was 4 tiny pieces of French = WHITE bread, lightly toasted. We are very healthy eaters -- lots of fruits & veg, whole grain breads, etc. Com was just NOT a healthy repast. and overpriced. $24 + $6 tip = $30 total. for just 2 entrees + 1 beer. ie, no appetizers, only 1 drink, no desserts. what a ripoff. ------------------------------- anyway, we decided , nxt time, we are going to go more "authentic." -- just drive up Buford Hwy -- so many Asian restaurants,, and pick the one that looks the grungiest -- eg, largest pile of dead cats out back. :)

Cons: lacks veggies

I tried this place a few weeks ago b/c my roommate recommended it, but I will NEVER go here again. Our server was awful, I asked him several times to recommend some dishes since I had never been there before. I could not understand him and everything he said was contradictory - for example he would tell me something was good and then later that he didn't recommend it. Overall the food was slim pickings and it had no flavor to it at all, it was a total waste of money.

Pros: None

Cons: Horrible service, disgusting food
