Editorial Review for Toast – by Florence Byrd

The Scene
Finally, a Midtown restaurant that has a sense of style, yet lacks pretension. Toast's punchy color scheme of tangerine and lime green creates a lively atmosphere. A brigade of bright-orange Arne Jacobsen chairs surround blond-wood tables. Over at the shiny stainless-steel bar, good-looking groups hover over cocktails and appetizers. No one takes themselves too seriously here--the vibe is decidedly cheerful.

The Food
Small dishes are the knockouts on Toast's New American menu. Homemade cappelletti, stuffed with delicate green pea puree and topped with brown butter and hazelnuts, are a study in subtle flavors. A simple mixed green salad is transformed by wisps of shaved pecorino and crunchy Marcona almonds. Another "pasta bite," velvety sweet corn and mascarpone agnolotti, gets a punch from nutty chanterelle mushrooms. Daily sandwich specials dubbed Toasties resemble pastries: A dome of puff pastry surrounds gooey filling combinations like fontina, prosciutto and arugula.

Visited Toast because it was listed as near the Fox, where we were going to a concert. It turns out it's an easy 6 - 8 minute walk to the theater, and the parking is only $3. (Vs $10 - $15 at the Fox!) So we simply left our car and walked to the theater. It was fairly early, so there was no wait to be seated. We mentioned to our server that we would need to finish in time to make the curtain time, so she pointed out a couple of menu items that would take a little longer in the kitchen, that we might want to avoid. We chose a Chicken Potpie - with an amazing tarragon biscuit! - and a lamb sandwich with cottage fries. And there's a good selection of wines by the glass - at reasonable prices. The server was right: our dinner choices were served promptly, leaving time for us to split a blackberry cobbler. Yes, we needed the walk to the Fox to work that off, but it was worth it! We could have sat on the patio all night, enjoying the spring weather and the last of our cobbler, but our server reminded us that we were due at the theater in a few minutes. We'll be back, concert or not.

Pros: excellent food, friendly service

I have been to Toast about a dozen times since it opened. I have never waited less than 30 minutes for my order but today was the worst. My party of 3 was the second party in the entire restaurant. We ordered and waited 45 minutes for them to bring bread. Because we had other meetings to go to, we asked them to please check on our order - three times. Twenty minutes later, they said that they would get "right on it". Unfortunately, the patio had filled up by this time, and only one table out of 20 or so had any food at all. Approximately one hour and twenty minutes after placing an order for gazpaucho, a burger, and a chicken sandwich, the food arrived. One of our party had already left. The gazpaucho was basically watery tomato sauce with about a jar and a half of black olives. I did not try any of the other food. I will never go there again and waste my time and money. The manager did not make us pay for our meal, but that's two hours of my life I'll never get back. Go to the Globe.

Pros: They didn't make me pay.

Cons: Food was over an hour in making it to the table.
