Editorial Review for Belly General Store – by Jonathan Baker

The Scene
Anchoring a bustling Virginia-Highland intersection, Belly General Store has risen from a century-old pharmacy and is now one of the most colorful neighborhood noshes. The general-store-meets-gourmet-deli theme is a strange but instantly lovable combination. With a nod to its historic past, there is a communal vibe to the restaurant--old, worn picnic tables with benches split the room down the center and high-top stools accompany the soda-fountain counter as strangers eat side-by-side.

The Food

Crowds flow out the door every morning for its mouth watering, made-daily olive oil bagel sandwiches, piping hot cups of rich buttery grits and fresh squeezed OJ. For good reason these breakfast staples can be ordered throughout the day while homemade pannini, empanadas and glass bottle Cokes shine during lunch. For the playful kid in you, don't leave without snagging one of its signature cupcakes.

Insider Tips

Save Time

Belly is the perfect get it n' go spot for breakfast or lunch. Bagels and sandwiches are wrapped in wax paper and delivered in a brown paper bag.

Know Before You Go

Avoid the weekend crowds because there is limited seating and only four seats in the restaurant have backs to them. Use Belly for an excuse to have a mid-morning or late afternoon meeting and have the place to yourself.

The Extras

Kudos for being eco-friendly. Belly sells bags of day-old bagels for super-cheap, and turns the leftovers into bagel chips.

I have a mixed review for Belly, having lived across the street from the would-be general store since its inception. For breakfast, Belly is simply wonderful, if limited. The bagel sandwiches (I am partial to the bacon, egg and cheese on a toasted sesame), are fabulous, and the cheese grits are some of the best that can be found in Atlanta (they use stone ground, automatically making them creamier and more textural than Aunt Jemima). Also great are the egg and cheese tortillas with mole. The coffee is excellent, and they squeeze the oj fresh to order. For lunch, the quality just doesn't seem to be consistently there. The three cheese panini is tasty, but way overpriced. The chicken salad sandwich is probably the best overall bet. And the cupcakes, over which they make such a fuss, are truly terrible - dry and crumbly with sour icing. Really, all the deserts are sub-par, and cannot in good conscience be recommended. So, if you find yourself in the Highlands in the morning, give them a shot, but don't stick around for lunch.

Pros: Great breakfast

Cons: Poor lunch and baked goods
