Editorial Review for Cho Dang Tofu House – by Min Kye
The Scene
A mostly Korean crowd packs this little gem. Friendly, red-aproned waitresses seat diners on spindly tables and bring them barley tea and salad. With its tan wallpaper and wood paneling, the sparsely decorated space is reminiscent of a basement rec room.
The Food
Spicy and soul-soothing, the fiery-red tofu soups called soon dubu are the house specialty. Swimming with chunks of soft tofu, the soup arrives in a piping-hot stone crock that resembles a cauldron. Diners may choose from 11 varieties, including mushroom and oyster, and from five heat selections starting with white, which is mild and ending with extra-spicy, suitable for chili pepper aficionados only. Once the soup arrives, diners break a raw egg into the molten liquid to cool and enrich the broth. Accompaniments include five dishes of panchan, Korean side dishes of cucumber and sprout salad, various kinds of kimchee and whole fried fish.

Insider Tips
Know Before You GoEnglish isn't the first language for most of the waitstaff, but signing and pointing seem to work when there's a language barrier.
Look GoodAt the conclusion of the meal, the waitress will pour barley tea over any leftover rice stuck to the cauldron. The burned rice scrapings make a tasty gruel that is toasty and serves as a palate cleanser after so much spicy food.
Save TimeFinding anything on Buford Highway can be confusing. Be on the look out for a white sign with red Korean writing. "Cho Dang Tofuhouse" is written underneath the Korean in smaller, English type. It is tucked between a car repair shop and a strip mall.
The ExtrasNon-soup eaters need not despair. Cho Dang also offers a version of Korean barbecue. There's also an unadvertised special of tofu soup and barbecue--perfect for big appetites.

We love Cho Dang Tofu House and are sure to stop in for at least two meals each time we are in Atlanta. (We even take home a couple containers of kimchee!) The atmosphere is very casual. The waitresses are all very sweet and accommodating, and treat you like family. Our favorite dishes include the pork and tofu soup, clam and tofu soup, oyster bosum (for 2), and the dol sot bebimbop (like the soups, served in a hot rock bowl). All of the panchan have been excellent and they bring a great variety -- often six or nine of these little side dishes, depending on how many people are in your party. The prices are very reasonable - the three of us can eat a bunch and get kimchee to go for less than $30, including giving them a generous tip.

Last year some Singaporian friends "dragged" me to my first Korean Tofu house. Now, I've been back at least once a month (sometimes more than once) since then. I love the Tofu soup and the BBQ is amazing. The best thing is that you get lots of little food dishes to go with your order. Honestly, I'm not familiar enough with Korean food to know what the veggie dishes are, but it's so good that I don't care! The staff is friendly and they remember me every time I return. Plus, the amount of food you get for the price makes the trip from Buckhead worthwhile for me!
