Editorial Review for Steak 'n Shake – by Citysearch Staff
In Short
Entering the clean, bright interior is like stepping into an "Archie" comic book. Hurrying across white- and black-checkered floors, staff in crisp white shirts and paper hats take orders, polish chrome and shuffle between booths and the full-service counter. Middle-American diner standards dominate the menu--pickle-covered steak burgers, chili cheeseburgers and thick shakes. Healthier options include chicken, chef and taco salads.

I had one of the worst dining experiences here. I used to be a server and understand the mistakes that can happen, however, from start to finish, it was a disaster. We dined at 1 am with not many other customers in the restaurant except for a couple of other tables and one large party that looked like it had been there for some time. First, the food took a very long time to arrive, which at such a slow time of day had no excuse (but it happens). Second, the food order was wrong. I ordered a Pepperjack melt sandwich that came out with none of the toppings except for the cheese (which wasn't even the right cheese). I sat there picking at it waiting for the server to notice us. When she finally did, I let her know that the sandwich was not right as it had none of the toppings on it. She apologized and took the plate away and since we were the table closest to the kitchen, we heard the manager tell the cook to remake it. At the same time, we could hear the cook griping and the servers gossiping about the situation. No manager approached our table, and never appeared after we heard him have our food remade. When the second attempt was brought out, it was still wrong--a few toppings made it in correctly plus some extras and it did not look fully cooked. I was so frustrated we asked for a box, which the server gladly gave us the smallest one she could find it seemed, as it could not even hold hardly half my sandwich. Even when she asked if we were okay, I said we were, though I was biting my tongue and thinking I'll never eat there again.
Cons: Service, food, ambiance...what's left to enjoy?
