Editorial Review for Papi's – by Jennifer Olvera

In Short
Savory, spicy dishes are order of the day at this Cuban joint. Choices include a Cuban sandwich with marinated, smoked pork, ham, Swiss cheese, dill pickles, mustard and mayo on Cuban bread, grilled chicken with black beans and plantains and red beans with white rice and shredded beef. For dessert, there's flan and rice pudding.

I've been to Papis dozens of times. The food is yummy--try their daily special entrees, that come with beans, rice, salad, bread and plantains. The jerkchicken is good and the fried plantains are addictive. My husband really enjoys getting the Cuban sandwiches. You can't beat the price either, under $10 per person. It is true that it does have a peculiar atmosphere (ie don't go here on a first date), but I like to sit at the large plate glass windows up front and watch the scene on Ponce. The only strage thing is that they never answer the phone. Even when I'm in the restaurant I'll watch the staff ignore a ringing phone. It would be nice to be able to phone in to-go orders. (Are they avoiding bill collectors?)

Pros: Great food

Cons: Friendly but ambivalent service

I went with a friend who loved this place but I had my doubts because some other friend told me the dish "ropa vieja" she ate was not good. I have had my exposure to good cuban cuisine (living in Miami for some years) and I was prepared to be dissapointed but I am glad to say I was not. The food it is pretty good and the price we got was very reasonable. I ate "ropa vieja" because it was the special and I have to say I will eat that dish at Papis again. The problem with the place is that is pretty small but it really does not mattter if what you want is a casual dinner with friends.

Pros: Cheap prices, good serving

Cons: Small place
