The Scene
Largely unadorned--not even a single Guinness poster--the Angel exudes a homey farmhouse feel. On any given night an eclectic mix of locals hunker down into velvety booths and handsome tables, while those craving a robust pint claim a stool at the large, centralized bar. Outdoor seating, with characteristic wooden barrels and long tables, is just about perfect on a warm evening.

The Draw
The Angel lures you to an English supper with three sweet words: bangers and mash. Hearty, but not heavy, with plump sausages, creamy mashed potatoes and a light Guinness gravy, the dish is utter satisfaction. In general, the Angel's chef takes pub grub to another level. Other tasty bites include blue cheese crisps with bits of bacon and scallion--a gorgeous complement to an icy cold pint--authentic fish and chips, pan-roasted halibut and lamb roast with couscous.

Unfortunately I found nothing ?Angelic? about The Angel in Decatur. Although it was not exceptionally busy, the service was appallingly slow and incompetent. The food was average at best and the kitchen took for-ev-er to prep the simplest of brunch dishes (how can it possibly take an hour and 15 minutes to make toast?!?). To add further insult every neighboring table was seated, served and cleared before some members of our party had even received their entrees. Throughout this entire process Houdini (oops, I mean our waitress) failed to make any appearance or to offer any apologies. It was a monumentally horrible experience and I would rather eat dirt for my next meal than return.

My friends & I really had a horrible experience at this place this weekend - poor service, everything that could go wrong did, with no apologies and tons of excuses. The food is decent, but nothing to write home about, and the menu is extremely limited. No vegetarian options at all, and only 3 or 4 options per course. If you don't want a sandwich, don't bother. We had to beg for refills on our drinks, they screwed up our order and didn't serve one of our party until the rest of us had finished eating, and they took forever to get our check - and then got that wrong too. Really sad considering the venue is well-appointed and they could do great things with it if they tried.

If a training team had video-taped our experience at Angel this past Sunday for brunch, it would be regarded as the absolute best example of how to get customers to NEVER come back. There was no manager, which isn't even legal. Just our waitress (a tall slim, Celine Dion-type) who was nice, but apparently has never experienced dining out herself. We waited 45 minutes on our food. She arrived with two of the four entrees, then disappeared. Ten minutes later she returned with one more and said "There was a mix-up on your omelette. It will be right out." Three of us sat there with our food getting cold when the fourth person in our party finally insisted that we start without him. We then watched the same waitress deliver all the food to a nearby table that had only been there 20 minutes. She never came back to refill our beverages and never apologized. She had no idea that there was anything wrong with any of this. Meanwhile, another waitress is heard apologizing to a nearby table at least four times. She later tells our waitress, "It's broken again and I can't ring anyone up. You need to call a manager." We wait forever on the check and watch other people leave having paid theirs. We remained completely ignored, probably because she knew we weren't happy and was scared to come back, which made it even worse. We had to ask twice for her to take the late food off our bill. She took it back, corrected it, then brought it out and dropped it on the table without a word. Nothing to say she was sorry we had such a terrible experience, to please come back, didn't offer to comp anything else in light of our terrible our experience had been. I'm sure when we left she said how glad she was the table from hell had left. But we're very reasonable diners, all four of us having waited tables or worked in the hospitality industry at some time or another. We understand mix-ups and delays. What is inexcusable is when the staff doesn't. She received a tip of exactly one cent.
