If you're looking for authentic Mexican cuisine in Historic Norcross, look no further than Zapata. With great lunch specials and a variety of molcajete stews, be sure to try out the Maya 3 combo and a jalapeno or strawberry margarita while you're there!
Breath of Fresh Air. Zapata's a great change from the typical fajitas, chip&watery salsa Atlanta Mexican restaurant. Everything on the menu looks great! The food is great and all the entrees aside from the seafood dishes are under $10.
My favorite restaurant in Atlanta area.
Zapata is a breath of fresh air -- this is REAL mexican food. Don't expect Taco Bell or Fronterra-like options here. I have tried nearly everything on the menu and I like the Crepas Poblanas the most.
Bonus: Margaritas are great and cheap
it will have been the best restaurant ever. the margaritas WILL be delicious.. i will have walked into zapatas with great anticipation and of course hunger. the service will have been very prompt and corteous. our table will be no where near the kitchen door, it will not wobble and it won't be even the slightest bit sticky, like other restaurant tables. the table itself will be assembled by a craftsman and he will have used the finest cherry woods and richest mahoganys available. the lighting will most likely have been done by burt's lighting inc. but i wll have not been able to tell till i got home later that evening and did an extensive internet search. but, after having done the search i will have learned that zapatas did indeed employ burts lighting inc, due to there well known and sought after name in the lighting and enviance for restauants.
Most Horrible Mexican Ever!!!.
My wife and I decided to try Zapata by reading the good reviews here. Needless to say it was the worst Mexican food we had ever had. And we love our Mexican food. I dont consider the food here authentic, however confused is something that comes to mind. The freshness and quality of the food was way below average. The queso was supposed to be cheddar and when it came out was clearly Mozzarella based. The ground beef smelled like it was prepared more than a week ago. The tortillas that came with out entrees had a weird smell to them. Not to mention that the entrees were a confused combination of ingredients.
The staff there was nice but very slow. Our waiter doesnt understand the basics of serving people. He should be taught that every time to put a drink down you dont have to go over their shoulder bumping into them. He could have done it in the middle of the table too. Plus he was very slow to get our orders. And I wouldnt give this place a $ in cost, probably a $$ because its certainly not inexpensive. I dont mind that but the quality and the value of the overall meal was probably below that of a fast food joint. Save yourself the disappointment and try out the so many other authentic as well as creative Mexican joints in this neighborhood.
I LOVE THIS PLACE!. This is authentic wonderful Mexican food. Everything I have eaten has been delicious and though the prices are a little higher, it's worth it! Everyone I have taken there has agreed that it's amazing, even my brother the Mexican Food Snob and my Texan "Tex-Mex is the best" friends!
interesting mexican food. This place is trying to offer a gourmet type experience in mexican cuisine. We went on a Sunday and the place was not full at all. It has a pleasant interior and nice staff. The food was OK. I went for the mole, which was good but not great. The fajitas were cooked in sauce, I was expecting them grilled and dryer. They were good though. The food in general is interesting but somehow is just a bit below one expects from the descriptions on the menu. The prices are also higher than in most mexican restaurants, so of course the expectation level is raised. It is great to see that they want to offer this type of cuisine.
Let Me Teach You Some Economics.
Restaurants are not charitable organizations. So if the prices at Zapata are the same as your local chain, then their costs are probably the same. You can either get lots of average food for a price, or less quantity of a more expensive food. So If your idea of a good meal is continuing your journey to obesity and diabetes, then stick with the free FRIED chips (CARBS) and lots of lard and cheese-laden (FAT) mexican food. There are lots of choices.
If you'd like something worth eating and still be able to stay awake the rest of the day, if loosening your belt isn't on your checklist for a quality restaurant, then go to Zapata.
Deep & Varied Menu - Delicious!.
Wow - what a find! Zapata is many steps above the avarage Mexican restaurant. The menu is Gourmet, Texas margarita one of the best, beautiful 'art gallery' feel to the space, couteous staff, & super clean restrooms. We look forward to going back.
BTW - they do serve chips - sounds like the previous reviewer who dinged them for no chips would be happier at the run of the mill El Aztecas of the world.
Good Prices, Does Not Equal Good Food! Salsa & Chips Might Help!. I was in the Norcross area the other day, and I remember reading good reviews for Zapata. I didn't care if it was in a strip-center. or they didn't serve salsa and chips. The place was packed at lunch time, so in I went. Well, if you like frozen T.V. Mexican dinners, at the same price, Zapata is for you. Atlanta has many budget priced Mexican spots, with really great tasty, fresh food, but this is not one of them. Maybe some nice warm chips, with good salsa might help.
Will never eat there again!.
Yesterday I ate at Zapata for lunch. The atmosphere was good and the place looked nice. However, while I was eating chips and dip, I bit into a staple - a very unpleasant experience. So I quietly let the waiter know that the mangled staple on the table came from their food. Without a word, he whisked it away.
I like to approach situations like this in a non-demanding way, just to test the character of the organization. I'm not interested in sueing anyone or getting a free lunch. Having grown up in a restaurant, I understand that strange things happen.
No one apologized. Not even the waiter. No one came by to make sure I didn't break a tooth or anything like that. But when I got my bill, I was given a 15% discount and the waiter boldly circled the discount to make sure I "got" it. Wow-wee, I saved $1.62 by chewing on a staple.
I will never ever even consider eating there again.
A Creative Mexican Restaurant!. The previous reviews are pretty accurate. You get really good and original dishes, at great prices, and the restuarant is in a 'strip mall'. But really it's a nice setting, the 'strip mall' is just a few shops, obviously recently built, hey there's a Starbucks right next door! I've been in the Atlanta suburbs for a few years now and this is the best Mexican restuarant I've been to by far, and it's no more expensive than the standard taco/fajita places. I had some stew dish with beef, cactus, and tomatos served in a big piping hot lava bowl, and it was super, never seen anything like it before. Plus the kids chicken meal was a beautifully aranged plate of food which she loved. I was really impressed at the efforts they make in the quality of the food and the arrangement and presentation. I definitely recommend this place.
