“Atlanta has many great restaurants--there's no reason to throw your money away on a pretentious, overpriced place staffed by people who are both pompous and inept.”
“recently dined there not long after the new owners came on board and my experience was amazing.”
Executive chef Tyler Williams has picked up where Top Chef Kevin Gillespie left off in one of Atlanta's premier white tablecloth restaurants. He continues the restaurants careful sourcing of area ingredients and makes good use of the space's centerpiece wood fired oven. Brian Stanger pulls of excellent craft cocktails and the wine list doesn't skip a beat.
A new farm-to-table concept adds to the same great wood-grilled delights at this Cheshire Bridge landmark..
Appropriately, a large wood-fired oven dominates the dining room done in warm, coppery tones. The kitchen is manned by Kevin Gillespie, who took over for the massively-popular Michael Tuohy in 2008. Fans of the former chef's cooking should be pleased with Gillespie's transition--dishing a diverse and rotating menu that focuses on fresh ingredients, yet keeps the wood-cooking philosophy intact. The new lineup is less Californian and more share-able farm-to-table, with local rabbit, fish and Birkshire pork setting the tone. Wood-fired pizza features house-made fennel sausage and ricotta while entrees fancy-it-up with roasted rabbit leg and Sonoma duck breast. Those with an adventurous pallet should try the multi-course chef's dinner--designed personally by Gillespie and not revealed until each dish arrives--for a unique dining option.
My New Secret Spot.
I've been dining in Atlanta for many years. I've heard the same names tossed around when looking for a new place to dine but I had never heard of this one before. My date and I walked in and I was amazed at how impressive the space is. We sat down at the beautiful copper topped bar and we ordered two of their custom sidecar martinis made with all fresh squeezed organic juices.
I'm not a big wine buff or food snob so I usually like to be coached along by the servers at a restaurant. Our server was wonderful in this aspect as he had no qualms highlighting his favorites and then suggesting wine pairings with detailed explanations of how the flavors would interact.
It has only been a week since we dined, but I'm looking forward to going back when my parents come into town next week.
Fresh and Fun!. I went to Woodfire Grill while I was visiting from out of town and was thoroughly impressed. We were meeting people for dinner so we stopped at the bar for a drink. The bartender had several very good wines to chose from, as well as some fun mixed drinks. The service the entire night was attentive and knowledgeable about the menu, which I understand is seasonal, so they serve only the freshest food. The portions were just right and the quality of the food was amazing. I will definitely come back again and again.
Great food, great atmosphere, great service!. I?ve been to Woodfire several times since the new owners took over and have enjoyed it every time. The creative, seasonal cuisine is always perfectly cooked and beautifully presented. And the attentive and knowledgeable staff offer impeccable service. I?ve eaten the tasting menu several times and highly recommend it ? it?s fun to be surprised with each course. And Nick, the owner, is always eager to offer some great wine pairing recommendations. Some of my favorites dishes include the sweet cream of corn soup, the Georgia fried catfish stuffed with shrimp, and as a side dish, the polenta (best in the city). Also, for desert, try the award-winning sweet potato panna cotta, which is absolutely delicious or their new chocolate cake with banana cream and chocolate peanut butter ice cream - just sinfully good!
Great dining experience. The food is perfectly prepared, fresh and delicious and the menu changes every time we go so there is always something new to try. The chocolate cake and the sweet potato panna cotta desserts are to die for!!If you don't know which wine would be best with your dinner, just ask Nick and he'll select just the right one. We have always had great service every time we've gone, and we'll continue to go back for great dining experiences.
Wonderful Experience Under the New Owners!. It had been years since my first visit and I'm glad I returned when I did. From the lovely aroma of the wood fire grill from the main dining room, to the sincere "thank you" and "good bye" at our departure from both owners, Woodfire Grill was delicious. I've been twice in the last month with different guests and everyone enjoyed the experience. The five course "tasting" menu was very complete having samplings from various local offerings, each contributing great combinations in flavor. Also, the culotte steak was perfectly prepared, and Nick Quinones made a terrific wine pairing recommendation that was a home run. Each time we went was for the dining experience of unique locally acquired foods, a proven talented chef, and personalized service. We were not disappointed. I would also recommend their "bar menu" which had outstanding meats and cheeses available. The signature cocktails were very satisfying, and the staff was very knowledgeable regarding the entire menu. Woodfire Grill would be ideal for a business dinner, a family celebration or a romantic evening. You won't be disappointed either!
A Perfect Evening.
Woodfire Grill is the BEST place to spend a wonderful evening, whether with a group of friends or just yourself and a special someone. I recently dined there not long after the new owners came on board and my experience was amazing. I liked how the facility itself, tho very nice, did not distract you from the unbelievable food. We met the chef and were surprised at how one so young could have such a brilliant ability to prepare outstanding farm to table fare. We elected to include the wine parings with a five course chef's choice which I strongly encourage...not only were the wines excellent but the origin, etc of them as explained by Nicholas Quinones was fascinating!
None of the places I've eaten before were enough to inspire me to do a review...just go....you will not be dissapointed! By the time you are leaving, you will be trying to figure out how soon you can return!
NEW OWNERS, NEW CHEF=EXCELLENT Experience.
I took my Mother and Wife to Woodfire Grill a few weeks back to give them a try...I was familiar that they were under new management and I had concerns that the food or mood would be different.
I am such a fan of pre-fixed course meals...we all had the 5 course executive chef prepared meal paired with 5 wines. We were very impressed with the selections that the chef came up with. On one of the courses he came over explained his vision on the course. He was very personable and YOUNG. I think Woodfire has a lot going for them. Again the food was prepared perfectly...and I believe the Farm to Table concept will work out well as there are many different options for Woodfire as GA has 4 uniquely different seasons food offerings.
Finally, the wine the wine. What can I say...the new owner Nick impressed us over and over again with his pairings and overall knowledge of the wine. I felt like we were in the wine region itself enjoying each glass of wine looking over the vineyard on a veranda.
Overall we had a wonderful experience and I look forward to going back often, just not for special occasions!
Most Unique Menu. Woodfire Grill has a very unique menu and the selections we tried were very good. The wine selection is varied and the ones we selected were excellent. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful. I like the fact that they use local products for their menu. The atmosphere is conducive to a great night out in Atlanta. We were visiting from out of state in September 2008 and Woodfire Grill was recommended to us by friends who live in the Atlanta area - it certainly lived up to their recommendation and we will most certainly go back next time we're in Atlanta.
Excellent evening. My wife and i had dinner at Woodfire Grill the other night. I hadn't been in since the original owners had left, but had a fantastic meal. The mood was much more relaxed and fun than it was even a few months ago! The food was amazing, the wine was great, i really enjoyed everybody's service. I really had a great time and would recommend it to friends!
