Editorial Review for Vinocity Kirkwood – by Jonathan Baker

The Scene
A bright neon sign glows proudly over Hosea Williams Drive announcing Vinocity's relocation to a two-story loft in Kirkwood Station. The bottom floor is decked in comfy booths and lounge seating, while white tablecloths provide an elegant upstairs setting overlooking the restaurant. Engaging service, big windows and live music make it a likeable neighborhood nosh.

The Food
The menu is a back-and-forth battle of casual bar food and upscale dining, leaving the restaurant lacking identity. Mediterranean mussles alongside buffalo wings cements menu confusion and a hit-and-miss kitchen experience that continues through the meal. Duck confit egg rolls are a sad, uninspired small plate lacking any power or pizzazz, while a wonderful pan-seared rack of lamb entree sits juicily in its tartly-flavored Creole mustard crust atop a bed of truffled mashed potatoes. Bar food lovers should pair one of the many sandwiches with a basket of fries and feta dipping sauce, but steer clear from the sloppy, soggy barbecue sandwich--it has a Turner Field quality about it.

Hits: The kitchen excels at high-end entrees, like the signature swordfish in a crispy pecan crust.

Misses: The low-end bar food clutters the menu and takes away from the elegant atmosphere.

Insider Tips

Know Before You Go

Monday night is a cool combo of trivia and live music. A two-man band plays the role of MC and performs songs in between the questions.

What to Drink

Try a malbec on the wine list -- a gentle red resembling a smoother Pinot Noir.

The Extras

Ranking high on the buzz-o-meter is the house-invented Manmosa. Vinocity took the standard mimosa and replaced the orange juice with Grand Marnier.

When to Go

Brunch is offered on Saturdays and Sundays from 8am to 3pm, and the Dr. Feel-good bloody mary or Manmosa will set you straight.

The Extras

For dessert, try the blood orange creme brulee: It's a Creamsicle for grown-ups.

I've been trying to give Vinocity the benefit of the doubt since it opened. The service was poor when it opened but has since improved which is standard for any new restaurant. What has not changed is the quality of the food. The sandwiches and apps are very good...The Entrees are another story...When I spend 20 bucks and above on any food it better be hot and it better be good. Neither happens here. I've ordered the filet, I've ordered the salmon, I've ordered the shrimp...it is either luke warm or average tasting. I mean I can make grits better than these guys. The funny thing is that the place is pretty cool and it is always crowded meaning that customers are either dumb or they just don't know any better. I'll continue to go for wine and apps but never again for big meals or special occasions...too bad given that i live 1 min away.

I went out to dinner with my fiance last friday night at vinocity. It wasn't our first choice, but the restaurant we had planned on going to had an hour long wait. My fiance said she new of a place up the road from our house so we decided to go there. It was pretty busy and we were worried we wouldn't get a table, but the hostess instantly came up to us with a big smile and sat us immediatly in a cozy little booth in the corner. Since we had never been there before we asked our waitor for recommendations, and he was on the money every time. We had a pork ravioli appetizer that was amazing. My fiance had the salmon and I had the lamb and we ended up sharing them because they were both so good. The wine selection was also great. We ended up sitting there for two hours listening to music and our waitor was attentive the whole time. The only thing I regret is not knowing about this place sooner.

Pros: Staff, menu, atmosphere
