Editorial Review for Tallulah Gorge State Park – by Darren Kennedy
The Scene
Located 100 miles northeast of Atlanta along U.S. 441, Tallulah Gorge is a popular day trip and weekend getaway destination. The 1,000-foot-deep gorge boasts five scenic waterfalls and plenty of photo ops.
The Activities
Six hiking trails cover 20 miles. Anglers fish in the 63-acre Tallulah Lake, while others lounge by its shore and take dips to cool off. More swimming can be had if you're willing to work for it; a sliding rock waits at the bottom of the gorge, but you must hike a 700-foot drop at a 45-degree angle over boulders. Those with more leisurely pursuits can take advantage of the ample camping and picnicking facilities. A learning experience for kids, the Jane Hurt Yarn Interpretive Center hosts interactive displays featuring the history and wildlife of the area.
