Editorial Review for Tallulah Gorge State Park – by Darren Kennedy

The Scene
Located 100 miles northeast of Atlanta along U.S. 441, Tallulah Gorge is a popular day trip and weekend getaway destination. The 1,000-foot-deep gorge boasts five scenic waterfalls and plenty of photo ops.

The Activities
Six hiking trails cover 20 miles. Anglers fish in the 63-acre Tallulah Lake, while others lounge by its shore and take dips to cool off. More swimming can be had if you're willing to work for it; a sliding rock waits at the bottom of the gorge, but you must hike a 700-foot drop at a 45-degree angle over boulders. Those with more leisurely pursuits can take advantage of the ample camping and picnicking facilities. A learning experience for kids, the Jane Hurt Yarn Interpretive Center hosts interactive displays featuring the history and wildlife of the area.

The $4 parking fee is waived on Wednesdays, and visitors are admitted for free.

Know Before You Go

The hiking trail to the floor of the gorge is challenging and requires advance check-in at the Interpretive Center. This trail is often closed, so it's best to inquire ahead of time.

The Extras

Park officials grant 100 permits a day to hikers who want to trek to the gorge floor. On busy weekends the cap usually is reached by 1pm.
