This dark and lively Buckhead jewel will have you coming back again and again for their juicy steak and crispy mac and cheese

Hal's is the quintessential neighborhood spot. A second floor was added to accommodate those wanting to dine. Must go if in Buckhead.

In my opinion, Hal's has the best steak in town and has one of the most lively bar scenes around. It can get a little loud, but it's fun, and the people watching is amazing...especially at the bar; think sugar daddies on the prowl!
Strong Steak, Drinks and Serious Service and Fun. I dont write many reviews of restaurants- but my experience this weekend at Hal's was awesome. This is not your average fine restaurant. It hits a lot of marks all at once somehow- kindof a new york feel- you can tell there are many regulars. young and old mingle at the bar (full of action)- extremely professional service, great menu, the crowd is sophisticated and hype- Not for the faint of heart. Strongly recommended.
The best views of old atlanta and best filet on the planet.. When I drank, and I drank often, I wanted restaurants that could cater to my lemon drop addiction. Hal's did not disappoint one bit. This place has the best atmosphere -- you can't believe some of the sights you see in this location! But it's not just the people-watching -- you have to have their steak. It has to be the best in Atlanta. The service is terrific. The valet is prompt and courteous. I cannot describe how we are to have been introduced to this restaurant!!
Believe the hype -. Hal's was recommended to me by a co-worker who raved that Hal's had the best steaks in Atlanta - particularly for a restaurant that a lot of people have not heard of. I was looking for a nice place to take my girlfriend for her birthday dinner that was NEW (and since we eat out a lot, this was no easy feat). On his recommendation, I chose Hal's. Everything my co-worker said in recommending Hal's proved true. The steak was absolutely excellent - better than most of the higher profile/more well known steakhouses in Atlanta. Service was excellent - the staff including the host were very attentive to our every need. Everything was just the way I had hoped it would be. I will absolutely be coming back. The only downside appears to be that word is out on Hal's and it gets really crowded (including the party of 10 men next to us who were very loud). But in terms of ambience, food, wine list and service, I have not found a better establishment anywhere in Atlanta.
Very Disappointing. So after hearing a lot about this place, we finally went. And it was so bad I feel the need to sit down and write about it right away. The service was GREAT!!! Bobby (our server) rocked. He was attentive and very prompt without being over bearing. However, the food was abyssmal. The trout was too buttery...to the point where I felt like I was going to be sick. The salmon was better but still, too buttery. If you would like to clog your arteries, this is the place for you. The dessert was mediocre. The only thing we liked was the house pinot. Not to mention the fact that this was the most over priced restaurant with some terrible food, we had ever been to. We don't mind paying for good food, and there have been some pretty expensive restaurants we frequent, that we absolutely love! This was just the worst food I have ever had in my 10 years of living in Atlanta. No taste to the food, just...a lot of butter. And I love butter! Which is why this is strange and very honest, coming from me. I would strongly recommend not going there.
Best filet in Atlanta. Been to Bones, Chops, Ruth Chris, etc. Hal's has by far the best filet in town. Plus the atmosphere is great and has an intimate local feel. You will not be disappointed!
Not great food...save your money. My husband and I decided to try Hal's for our wedding anniversary. We would always see lots of cars parked outside when we passed by the area. I read the reviews and thought, "why not?" My husband ordered the filet au poivre and I ordered the snapper franchaise. I felt all of the food was really salty. I have eaten at Bone's, Chops, Ruth's Chris, Flemmings, and Prime for steaks which are much better. The complimentary sides (creamed spinach and mashed potatoes) were average at best. My snapper was cooked well but the lemon butter sauce was really salty (wondered if they use salted butter to make the sauce). The filet was good but not great. It was juicy but they don't know how to properly butterfly a filet (he got two separate pieces). We will not be returning. It is too overpriced for the type of retro appearing cusine they are serving. You can judge for yourself.
Not A Happy Birthday Here! Unprofessional Management!. This was supposed to be a Happy Birthday occasion, for a very good friend. We came early, and ordered drinks, which were O.K., until all our party arrived. Of course we all wanted the much touted steaks. At our waiters suggestion, we ordered all sides, family style, to pass around. The steaks finally came after a long wait. Pure salt. Birthday girl had to send hers back three times, and finally the little piece of same fatty meat came back, and she was just over it. The creamed spinach, and whatever else the sides were, just tasted of salt. When our waiter brought the check to the table, sides were charged to each person individually, and double on some guests tabs. We asked for the manager on duty, who we found out later is the owner's son, and he certainly did not know what he was doing. It took us three days with our Bank, to get the charges straightened out. Even heavy drinks at Johnny's, could not overcome this Birthday celebration.
Best Cow in ATL. I've eaten at all of Atlanta's high-end steak houses and this is the place for the best steak in the city. Everything about Hal's is perfect: the service is great; drinks are fantastic (try a Sapphire martini w/ stuffed olives); atmosphere is laid-back and the food is remarkable. Did I mention they have the best steak in the city?
Great Experience. I don't know if I will be able to capture how wonderful my dining experience was here but I will give it my best try. As a tradition, I have the opportunity to dine with the "Big Boss" at the conclusion or last night of a meeting. He always asks me to choose the place and I have been somewhat succesful in the past by choosing places I had been to before and had experienced. Not was the case on this night, I turned over the decision making to my close friend and colleague who lives nearby to make the call. None of us had heard of the place and we even kept asking for her to repeat the name so we would get it right. However, once we walked in the doors, my worries were gone. The dark and cozy atmosphere was perfect for this dinner and it felt as if we were at a friendly neighborhood restaurant. That is a positive thing. The food and service that followed was outstanding and rivaled some of the fine dining restaurants in Atlanta. The attention to the true tastes of its menu items were noticeable in both it's Lobster bisque and especially in it's Gumbo. The 12 ounce Filet I had was wonderful and everyone at our table left full and happy. I would highly recommend this place !!!
Happy Hour Low Down. Went with a friend for cocktails. Drinks are strong, complimentary fried chicken drummettes, cheese and veges, waitresses young & pretty, clientele "Good Ol' Boys." Most people who come here aren't as thrifty as me, but I enjoyed the over-abundance of free food since everyone else was ordering from the pricey menu. We did order the Oysters and they were delicious. We will come back for the food and to see if the clientele is different.
