Editorial Review for Goldberg's Bagel Company & Deli – by Michael Longshore

The Scene
Not exactly like getting caught in the middle of Penn Station during rush hour, but Goldberg's has just the right amount of fast-paced, NYC moxie to pass for the real thing and just enough of a local cultural oddity to rate as a mild adventure. Decor runs from Broadway playbills and wrestling glamour pics, but the real eye candy's the meal.

The Food
Dried meats hang above the counter, bagels and fresh breads tempt the senses, along with a barrel full of pickles. Sample the de rigueur Jewish deli exotica: kippered salmon, herring in sour cream, chopped liver, and beef tongue. So whether you go the classic sandwich route (hot pastrami on rye), or just get tuna salad on a bagel, it's hard to go wrong. In a hurry? Grab one of the deli's premade po'boys--it's the ideal quick lunch, with the possibly of leftovers.

I can tell you after working in restaurants for ten years that I have only heard of the practice of making servers pay for the convenience of using a credit card machine once. That was the Ritz-Carlton. Not only is Goldberg's so cheap that they also employ this practice, they also make their servers tip out 20% to the bussers. It is unheard of in the insustry. I've had Goldberg's bagels before, and yeah they're good, but come on, Publix makes bagels. Not to mention the other fine establishments on the Best Of list, like Belly. If you don't get a bad taste in your mouth from frequenting a place where management yells in front of customers and treats its own staff as expendible, then enjoy Goldberg's. Clearly you have as much class and taste as these clowns.

I have been to both the West Paces location and the Dunwoody Deli. Service is nice, yet the food is terribly overpriced. I paid with a credit card and the waiter suggested we tip in cash because the owner deducts from each credit card tip in order to cover the AMEX cost. I find this to be horrid considering wait staff works for commission. I also witnessed management yelling at a line cook and using extremely derogatory lanuage. I find this behavior highly inappropriate and unacceptable from a place of business. Although the food was satisfactory, the questionable management and ownership have secured that I will never contribute money to the oppressive practices at Goldberg's Deli.
