My complaint lies with the owner. My friend and I decided to go do Downwind, have some beers, and enjoy our Saturday afternoon catching up. We arrived there at 3pm, found a table on the porch, and proceeded to have a great time ordering Coronas. Then things changed drastically: We were approached by our waitress who informed us that the owner (who was also bar tending) asked us to leave our table and finish our beers at the bar so "people waiting inside can have our table." We were both in shock. This is first time that either of us have ever been asked to physically get up from our table, come inside, and sit at the bar. The most insulting part is that we spent more money on our drinks ($60) than the majority of the families there who came in and ordered food. Think twice before dining here . . .

Downwind is so wonderful!. Downwind has been making moussaka on Wednesdays for the last few weeks and I tried it last night. It was the best moussaka I've ever had in thirty years as a moussaka fan! Thick, creamy, cheesy bechamel sauce baked on top just the way I love it.

They did a beautiful job of redecorating the restaurant a couple months back. Don't worry, all the aircraft pictures are still there!

The lovely "Peaches" sings jazz standards as appropriate reserved background dining entertainment on some Wednesdays-there's lots of buzz about her in Chamblee. She's been very well received by patrons of Downwind. The bands they have there Fridays and Saturdays are consistently really enjoyable. Friday night is "date night": we love the kids and the kids love the restaurant and planes but it's nice that they have one night for the adults.

Same warm and friendly family-owned restaurant we have all loved for many many years. Reasonable prices for really great dining.

Continued success to you!

great burgers; super friendly. My wife and son checked Downwind out on a rainy day. I can't believe I've missed this place despite living in Dunwoody the past 15 years. The burgers were fantastic and the service was good. My son loved it and we'll be back!

Best burgers and beer; Have no fear.. Friendly place with great burgers and cold beer. What more could you want? Service is friendly and efficient, and the extension deck over looks the runways.

Our 5 year old is welcome, and can use the playground close by. Friday night is "date night", and patrons are "strongly" encouraged not to bring kids after 7:00pm. Whether this is enforced or not, I do not know.

Southwind Restaurant is a place to unwind in an unpretentious environment.

Best family friendly burger joint in Atlanta.. Can't go wrong with Downwind. Once you experience it, you'll be wishing you had discovered it years before. Just don't tell everyone you know. We want to keep it a secret, sort of. Best Burgers in Atlanta with a good menu to satify everyones desires.

PAYING FOR HOSTILITY. My fiancee and I were served food that clearly was not fit for eating-in both of our opinions. When we very politely and quietly let the owner's daughter know that there was something wrong with what we were served we were met with hostility, not gratitude. We will not return to this restaurant.

Come for the Atmosphere. My husband and I loved the atmosphere of this place, right next to Dekalb Peachtree Airport and its colorful lights and small planes. The service was cheerful and friendly, was not very impressed with the food though. Granted, we didn't try the burgers and fries that Downwind is known for. Instead I opted for the spanikopita, I liked it, pastry, spinach and cheese can't go wrong with me. My husband ordered the grilled shrimp, it was definitely nothing to brag about and was served on a small plate, not worth the price. The calamari appetizer was good, the rings are cut larger than normal, but again, for its price, we could get a much bigger plate at a more upscale establishment. I left feeling I paid too much, but my husband said he would come again because of the atmosphere. That was what we were paying for, not the food.

The burgers and fries and to die for!!!!. When I first went to this place with my co-workers, I thought it was some rinky dink place but as soon as we entered, we were greeted with warm welcomes and friendly service. The atmosphere is really cool and the food is delicious. Every last one of my co-workers emphasized how tasty their food was. I'm a loyal customer now. Thanks Downwind!!!!

My FAVORITE!!. This is one of my very favorite resturants. I eat lunch here at least once a week. The specials are always wonderful and you can't beat the burgers. The owner makes you feel like you are a member of his family. The deck is perfect for an afternoon beer.

A superb vantage point to quaff beers and eat bar food.. The Scene
The deck of this bar and grill attached to tiny DeKalb-Peachtree Airport overlooks single-engine planes arriving and departing (and, on a clear day, Stone Mountain). The unique perspective and efficient staff make it an ideal place to bring children, out-of-town guests or aviation enthusiasts. Inside, there's a plainly-furnished bar with a zillion airplane pictures on the wall.

The Food
Stick to basic bar grub like jalapeno poppers, crunchy chicken fingers and surprisingly good fried calamari. The lunch cheeseburger is simply good, but there's also an ambitious dinner burger, stuffed with cheese, mushrooms and onions. The fried chicken dinner, billed as the chef's specialty, is a modest-sized portion lightly fried, served with green beans and brussel sprouts in white sauce. Greek items like spanikopita sound relatively exotic, but prove to be safe bets.
