“This place is always flawless and so fun!”
“can say Hae Woon Dae's bbq ribs are pretty good and the gal bi jjim is always a great choice for lunch.”
“It's a little tough to overlook some of the more unappetizing descriptions on the menu, i.e. Beef intestine in spicy sauce; however, there are many wonderful options!”
“The food is great and the service is great.”
“The bathrooms were a bad gas station nightmare and there are two rather unsavory looking "adult entertainment" establishments in the same strip mall but, if you can overlook such things, it's definitely worth a trip!”
Couldn't become a favorite.
I'm very surprised at the high ratings this restaurant has received. The food isn't terrible, but it's not very good Korean food- fried appetizers are too greasy, and not seasoned well, Bulgogi dishes are not spiced well and the meat has too much fat. The food quality does not nearly justify the price, especially when there are so many other Korean BBQ restaurants around this area with better food and the same or lower prices.
Besides the food, the staff seems overly indifferent to the guests. Server put a hot bowl of soup next to my arm. Food took much too long to make, for how many people were in the restaurant.
How a place like this can stay open, while Korean Garden down the road shuts down is beyond me (location?). Something I thought was interesting though- no person in the restaurant was Korean besides me, and I certainly won't be going back.
Cleaner habits please?. Don't get me wrong, the food was very tasty, until I noticed some bad sanitation habits. I noticed the lettuce (served on a plate by itself), is being recycled between customers. For example, when customers finish eating, the servers will come and pick up the plate with the lettuce that the customer didn't eat ONLY. Why not pick up the other dirty dishes? The dishboy eventually comes and picks up the other dirty dishes. Ah ha, the server takes the uneaten lettuce and use it for the next customer. Yes, that will save them money, but how do you know if the last customer touched or coughed bacteria /virus on it. I also noticed a server's nose was runny and she kept wiping her runny nose on her sleeve! Our waitress wasn't too nice or attentive as well. I for one would not recommend this place!
DISGUSTING.
I found an insect in my food and told the waitress. She took a look at it, and upon realizing that it was an insect, walked away, pretending to inspect it further, rolled it in between her fingers, came back and said "It's not an insect it was a burnt flake in the food." I said to her "I saw the antennas on the insect before I saw you roll it up with your finger." She kind of just ignored me then walked away.
I believe this is a horrible way to conduct business. Not only did she not apologize, she LIED and told me that I was wrong, didn't approach me the rest of the dinner, then charged me for my meal. Needless to say, I will NOT be eating there ever again.
Enh, better places elsewhere. I invited 5 people to come try Hae Woon Dae recently. We found the service adequate and the food delicious. However, we ordered 6 BBQ dishes for 6 people and found the amount of food lacking. Rice was only offered as an option (which became a necessity for us to try to feel full), a few side dishes were only replaced once throughout the entire meal (even though we had multiple empty plates waiting to be refilled after that), and immediately after the last bit of meat was cooked, they removed all the fire grill equipment and empty plates, leaving us to nibble on what was left. Only the two women in our group were satisfied. For an average of $17 or $18 per dish, we should have been stuffed - less money has gone MUCH further at the three or four other Korean restaurants that I've been to. They are very adamant about signing the right copy of the receipt (not really a problem though). I've actually been there over the course of a year or two - I kept thinking that it was just a fluke, but it hasn't changed. Please don't go here - you'll find better deals elsewhere.
Great Food and A Ton Of Fun. This place is always flawless and so fun! I can't say enough good things..... If you haven't been yet, you are missing out.
my personal experience as a korean customer.
i am Korean and i visit Korean restaurants as much as i can. i have been to several Korean bbqs, and up till today, this has been one of my favorite. i have given up the hopes that any Korean place is going to really taste like the restaurants in Korea but this restaurant has decent side dishes and the meat was good quality. (and they gave us a lot)
i didn't think that the service was ever bad, and they were always a lot more attentive than most Korean restaurants where they rush you to eat faster so you can pay faster (like cho sun ok). I definitely think that everyone should try this place out before they reject it based upon few bad ratings.
Rude service, bad food.. I am a Korean American and tonight I took my American friends to try Hae Woon Dae BBQ. I had eaten there before about five years ago and had a good experience. Food was not good at all this time. The meat was not marinated right. They didn't want to bring certain dishes that was part of the entree saying "Americans don't like this." I asked them to bring it anyway because I wanted my friends to try it. Maybe that offended them. There were six of us and the waitress told us in a rude tone we all had to order a meat dish in order for us to use the fire grills. When the check came out, she already included 18% tip on it. She said it was the rule for the restaurant to do that for more than three people. Why didn't she tell us before? She yelled at us for not signing the right copy of the receipt which basically ruined everyone's night. I've been to a lot of Korean restaurants and have never experienced such a bad service as Hae Woon Dae BBQ. Things are definitely overpriced for what they are compared to other Korean restaurants. They do that because they now serve more Americans than Koreans.
Food quality and service descending. The service and food used to be great at Haewondae (I have been going to this restaurant for at least 5 years). It seems like they have gotten cheap with the food. In comparison to other Korean barbecue's their meat is really fatty and they have gotten rid of all the waitresses that were actually nice. The new waiters are terrible and do not seem to understand english; a bit dimwitted and rude. The place is really shabby and is in dire need of renovations. Bathrooms are DISGUSTING!!
Illegal waiters don't understand much English.
I ordered Ox tail soup and there was a piece of metal from sponge and hurt my teeth. So I told them to take it away and I did not need another one. Waiter said "Ok, I'm sorry." and brought another one. I told him again that I did not want it anymore. And he said "Sorry about that", and charged me 2 Ox tail soup.
Foods are good but be careful when you order. It's good to point out the menu and make sure they understand. Sometimes it's not big deal but waste your time.
He was a young boy who might come to USA and study English somewhere.
Best Korean BBQ in TOWN!! Just ask a KOREAN!. Very authentic and welcoming Korean BBQ. With the open fire pits in the table to grill your own food. And if you are a fan of Kimchee... say no more! And don't forget the CASS beer to accompany. They even have even private rooms for partys of up to 8 people. Definitely well recommended.
