Editorial Review for Phuket Thai Restaurant – by Suzanne Wright
The Scene
Like countless other Atlanta restaurants, Phuket is huddled into a strip shopping center. One of the city's oldest Thai restaurants, its decor wavers between serene and kitschy and is comfortable in a pleasant, if not memorable, way. Dark jewel tones are used for the upholstery and linens, bamboo accents abound, and tall, leafy plants divide the dining room, buffering the din. Service is quick and efficient.
The Food
Flavors dance in a few dishes. Skip bland dumplings and instead try the yum yai, a cucumber, lettuce and carrot salad featuring shrimp, chicken, crushed peanuts and a bracing sweet-and-tart lime dressing. Kieo wan is a winning combination of green curry, chicken, green beans, peppers, onions, eggplant and bamboo shoots accented with basil. Pla jian is a boneless filet of sea bass that is lightly battered, fried and then dressed with a ginger-spiked sauce--it's good, but less rewarding than whole-fish versions.

I used to frequent this restaurant for several years. However, I had not been there for a while until today when I had a craving for pad thai. In the past, the food there has been excellent. Today it wasn't. I ordered the pad thai with chicken and shrimp and the pad prik khing wth chicken. I got the food to go. Once I got it home, there were 2 shrimp in the pad thai and the pad prik khing had an after taste of A-1 steak sauce. I was so disappointed with the food, I called the restaurant back to speak to the manager. The lady who picked up the phone (same lady who took the order) told me I could speak with the cook because the manager wasn't there. I asked the cook how many shrimp were supposed to be in the pad thai and whether the pad prik khing is supposed to have any carrots (trick question). She explained that indeed she uses only 2 shrimp in the pad thai and that she cooks the pad prik khing with carrots. The menu does not mention carrots in the pad prik khing. In fact, this is the first time anyone put carrots in this dish (that I've had). Needless to say, when I asked when the manager or owner would be available, the cook told me once again to speak with them. I asked whether the restaurant underwent any kind of management change, when the cook reluctantly admitted having worked there for only two months. In summary, if you're used to the old Phuket, do not go there. It's under new managment and the new cook doesn't know how to cook. I will not go back and would recommend the same to anyone who would even consider going there.
Cons: Cook does not know how to cook Thai food

When entering into the wonderfully decorated restaurant you will be instantly relaxed by the low light and beautiful aquarium that is displayed. The service is so quick that it makes you feel like you are a guest of honor. I ordered the Pad Thai and the flavor was wonderful. The night I went there was someone playing the piano that added to the atmosphere. I loved this restaurant and will go back again and again. Khadijah
Pros: great service
Cons: none
