Very Nice Time. We enjoy Dante's. The atmosphere is nice, the music is great. Definitely sit on the ship, it's worth it. The cheese fondue appetizer is very good. I can't believe people complain on here about the portion sizes --- I could not finish all of mine and my husband was full when he finished his and could not order dessert! The wait staff was attentive and knowledgeable. We were impressed with every aspect of our experience. It's not the Atlanta Grille at the Ritz-Carleton, but for the money it was a very unique experience.
Not for every-day dining as it is expensive, but definitely worth it. Dante's is very unique - the atmosphere is worth the experience alone. It looks as though you are dining on a ship, complete with live aligators in the moat below. The staff has always been friendly - everytime I go, I ask their recommendations and I have never been disappointed. Definitely try the strawberry daiquiri - it's the best I've ever had. The jazz band is great and the singer is phenomenal although you will pay extra to sit at a table with a view of the band. The parking is free, but don't be surprised when you see your tab as it is quite expensive for fondue. Ordering drinks will also bring your tab up quite a bit. It's not a place I want to dine at every weekend, but for any special occation it's great. Last time I was there we left a pretty hefty tip and once the waitress realized this she chased us into the parking lot to give us one of their anniversary glasses.
Dante's is a sham. I worked at Dante's two summers ago. I worked there as a cook, a dishwasher, and a host. I quickly realized that this "restaurant" was cutting corners at every turn. I have worked in other restaurants that pay attention to detail and quality. Dante's is simply not one of them. Let me start with the cheese fondue. You can pick it up at any publix supermarket because that is basically where it comes from. It is not any sort of hand crafted creation. Here are the directions I received to cook the cheese fondue: "Cut open the package and dump it in the pan. Heat it up and send it out." Somehow that shouldn't translate to more than 20 bucks for an entree portion. The kitchen is filthy as well. There are insects EVERYWHERE! They also claim that the oil contains no trans fats. This is a fabrication as it is not any sort of special oil without trans fats. It's full of them. And on top of that, the oil is re-used ALL week. Don't go on Thursday because that oil is a week old. The one thing that Dante's does is order good beef. That is about it. The rest of the ingredients are poorly kept and on top of that, there's not preparation done in the kitchen other than cutting up the meat. There is not a single person who works in that kitchen who is actually knowledgable about food. On to the desserts which are prepared "in house." They are ordered from a local bakery and heated up in the microwave before you get them at your table. I won't deny that they're good though. The chocolate cake is delicious and I ate many a piece while on shift. Finally the chocolate fondue. They claim that the fruit is brought fresh from some imaginary local market which is why you have to order it a couple of days in advance. This is not true. And the chocolate? Yes it is delicious and yes all it is is melted Toblerone with a little alcohol. The wait staff has a few good ones, but they only hire from within so they can't get any really talented staff to work there.
Best place to dine and in the heart of everything..
Great restaurant, been my favorite for years. The atmosphere is very unique and will be very memorable to everyone who has an opportunity to dine in this establishment. I love the steak fondue and their dessert of course.
WORST Restaurant in Atlanta, by far!!.
My wife and myself recently celebrated our 24th wedding anniversary, and chose to celebrate at Dante's Down the Toilet or "Hatch", take your pick, this was a big mistake. The service, or lack of, was the worst I've ever seen at any restaurant I've ever been to, and what's worse, the management and owner supports the the way this terrible place is operated. We were at this place over an hour and NEVER received any food! After ordering a menu item that was clearly explained to the waiter, and the waiter took the order, explained the restaurant format, which is strange in itself, then he wallked away, we assumed everything was fine. About 45 minutes to an hour later, I asked the waiter, "How much time do we have?" Meaning, how much wait time before we get our food, of course. His response was totally inappropriate for a customer to receive, a customer that has never been to this place before and is celebrating a anniversary. He said, "How much time do you need?" and then walked away. Me and my wife were totally confused! We finally got up to leave and my wife angryly went to the car, but I asked for the manager and the manager was totally unprofessional and took the side of the waiter. After a few minutes of back and forth heated conversation, I left in a huff and swore never to return. The manager responded, again, very unprofessionally. The final straw was that once I got outside, my wife was ready to leave this nightmare, as we were driving away, I felt that I should call to try to talk to someone else that was above the manager, and to my surprise I got the owner. The owner was the WORST of the bunch, and said many crazy and wild expletive words. In conclusion, THIS PLACE IS TERRIBLE!!!! PLEASE DO NOT GO THERE!!!!!!!!!
p.s. By the way, we are Black Americans.....I wonder if that made a difference.....maybe, maybe not.....you decide.
Cover charge to see band.....
My wife and I went there for the first time to celebrate our annivesary a couple of days ago. The atmosphere was nice and we just went for drinks and to hear the music.
The band was exceptional as we love jazz but the one thing that puts me off to the extent that I may not visit very often was the added charge to the bill if you wanted to sit and watch the band while eating or drinking.
I think this is a short sighted move by the management. By charging $7 on weekdays and $9 on the weekend many will simply go somewhere else to eat or drink. I enjoy the music and would have a tendency to sit and drink or eat longer if I'm there watching the band, instead, I'll probably bypass the experience and spend that money somewhere else on food or drink. It's just a bad idea and if I"m thinking this way then there surely are others as the place was empty the night we went.
excellent ambience, but awkward after comments from Dante himself. I was blown away by the setting! Loved the sea port feel... And this was actually where I hung out with my now-husband for the first time! I was in a group of five, and we had a great time laughing and enjoying the food. It does take a while to eat, but I actually prefer that...gives you a chance to really enjoy the company instead of just eating and running. The interesting part came when Dante actually came to our table multiple times during the evening to chat with us. His jovial eccentricities eventually became awkward as he began describing half-naked women that he'd met in an African tribe...he then went on to say that he wished he could see all of us ladies at the table the same way! Like I said-awkward. By the end of the evening, he was leaning over and whispering in my ear, "My mama says that you can come home with me." (I was 24 at the time, and he...MUCH older.) It actually freaked me out a little... so much so, that my now-husband started scooting over to block me from Dante, even confronting him! But, thanks to Dante, I saw the chivalry in my now-husband, and we're now married with a son! So, I guess that I should say, "Thanks, Dante! You're inappropriate comments pushed me into my husband's arms!" We've been back a few times since and still do enjoy the unique setting-and can happily say that we had no more embarassing or uncomfortable conversations!
Fantastic Fun and Romantic Date.
We went for Valentine's Day--which by far one of the worst nights to go out in Atlanta. However, we were seated promptly. I was surprised to know that we were greeted by Dante himself. I recommend the cozy cabin if you are on a romantic date. The waitstaff was very attentative to us. We had the Mandarin fondue platter and it was great.
If you are looking for a nice restaurant to go for a date night this is it. Great conversation in a cozy setting and a bit of smooth jazz!!!!!

All-Around Great Experience!.
Our party of four attended Dante's on a quite Sunday evening.
Our server Harold was great, extremely knowledgeable, chatty, friendly, and conscientious. His attention to us, and the feeling he genuinely cared about our experience was a refreshing change from the norm; not to mention he fit the motif of a pirate (something that goes well when you are eating on a ship!).
The food was delicious; the meat tender, the vegetables fresh, and the wine excellent. The atmosphere was unparalleled, a quirky combination of antique and unusual. The crocs add a nice flare, as do the mannequins, model ships, and the many pictures of notable figures of America with Dante.
This is a restaurant I would recommend to anyone; an experience that will not be forgotten, nor topped in the foreseeable future.
Thanks Dante! (and Harrold!)
