Stop in to peruse the latest exhibit, or steal a look behind the scenes, where artisans craft exquisite frames by hand..
The Scene
The space looks a lot more like a gallery than a frame shop, with its polished wood floors, high ceilings and well-lit exhibit spaces. A friendly, enthusiastic staff makes visitors feel welcome, and complimentary drinks and snacks add a nice touch.
The Goods
Avery specializes in 19th-century French oils, from pastoral landscapes and ocean scenes to portraiture. It shows antique botanicals and architectural renderings, plus a sprinkling of contemporary photography, engraving and gouache. However, the gallery's most outstanding feature is its handmade frames. Styles range from whimsical hand-painted designs to elaborate, filigreed moldings. The real action is in the warehouse behind the showroom, where a team of some 30 craftspeople makes these frames using labor-intensive, old world techniques. If you can imagine it, they can build it.
