The Hideaway (formerly New Order). Great neighborhood pub, with great bartenders, good drink prices, and a mixed bag of regulars, including professionals, industry types, and young men looking to get away from the meat markets of bars targeted to their generation.

Muched Mocked Bar Actually A Peaceful Escape. New Order is Atlanta's oldest gay bar and is often the butt of jokes like "wrinkle room" and "heavens entry gate" etc. but those perceptions are a bit misleading. It's one of few bars in Atlanta where you can actually have a conversation, as the music is low key and relaxing. Drinks are strong and reasonably priced, and the age demographic I have observed in this place isnt much different from Burkharts, Blakes or Amsterdam. Yes, there are younger people who go there, but its mostly 30s-50s guys. Best of all, the location behind Ansley Mall is one of the safest areas in town and parking in plentiful.

Don't let the pre-conceived stereotype keep you away from this gem. It is a helluva nice bar.

Regulars have been hitting this scene long before the hot Midtown bars were open or fashionable.. The Scene
Originally named El Matador, this tucked-away treat was one of the city's first gay bars in the 1970s, and the regulars have some stories to tell. These gracious mature gentlemen sip cocktails and beer around a central bar or chat in one of the private booths. A cozy fireplace sets the mood for cold nights, and open mic Thursdays let regulars express themselves. Pool, darts and pinball offers diversion to the after-work crowd, as Patsy Cline and Edith Piaf on the antique jukebox mourn lost love.

The Draw
This is the leisure locale for those who put a premium on talk over pointless bar chatter. Don't expect a raucous party--the days of the swanky sofas and swinging singles is long gone. Still, pull up a chair, order a martini mixed to near perfection, and you just might learn something. It's perfect for an enlightening gabfest before Friday night debauchery elsewhere.
