Editorial Review for Happy Herman's – by Michael Longshore

The Scene
This old-school upscale grocery sits next to an ancient dry cleaner, a strip-mall head shop and an all-night diner. The interior has a modest deli area, a wine shop, dry-goods shelves and a small dining area. Busy at lunch, it's home to a cross-section of Cheshire Bridge Road characters.

The Goods
This fun gourmet snacks spot might not offer ahi tuna or 100-year-old balsamic vinegar, but it does have novelty hot sauces, pricey candies and high-end potato chips, plus tea biscuits, coffees and a decent wine selection. Takeout options from the deli include tasty sandwich classics like po'boys and a Cubano, alongside composed dishes (four kinds of potato salad, Day-Glo curried chicken, Asian-accented angel hair pasta). Hot daily specials include roasted brisket and smoked turkey breast. Remember it for pre-assembled gift baskets and Chastain concert picnic setups.

Happy Hermans has gourmet, healthy prepared foods. They have it ready made, and the selection and variety is excellent. The salads are excellent as well.

Growing up in Atlanta, in the 50's & 60's, Happy Herman's was the only place to buy Kosher luncheon meats, Godiva Chocolate's, and anything else a wondering child could want. Herman Mitchell owned everything on this end of Cheshire Bridge Rd., along with the original Dunk N' Die! And it finally did. Times have changed, ownership also, but the memories will not!

Pros: Original Gourmet Foods!

Cons: Parking Is Limited!
