“The staff and ambience was wonderful.”
Wonders of Ancient Egypt make this museum a cultural landmark..
Overview
Situated on the Emory University campus in a space designed by renowned architect Michael Graves, the museum specializes in ancient art. Egypt, Greece, Rome, the Near East, sub-Saharan Africa and the ancient Americas are the source of 15,000 artifacts spanning roughly 9,000 years of human history, from the seventh millennium B.C. to the 20th century. Jewel-like small galleries hold excerpts from the museum's permanent collections, while the multi-chambered main gallery hosts a world of exceptional temporary exhibitions.
The Facts
After the lightning-bolt acquisition of a significant number of mummies from a neglected 19th century collection in Niagara Falls, the Carlos became a cultural landmark. A wondrous exhibit of ancient funerary art from Egypt, Nubia and the Near East is always on view in specially designed galleries. Take a magical mystery tour through twilit halls arrayed with decorated coffins, human and animal mummies, canopic jars (holding the mummies' insides), statuettes, basketry, tools, amulets and jewelry.
Greek is great. Fine range of works from the greek Bronze Age through the roman period; well displayed and documented; not overwhelming and great for teaching.
Fabulous. The staff and ambience was wonderful. The experience was a educational and informative. Thank you.
Extreme Pleasure. An afternoon at the Carlos Museum takes you out of your original mindset and provides extreme pleasure in the ageless wonders of the world.
Smashing!. Fantastic facility!!! The Michael C. Carlos Museum never fails to satisfy...!
Ancient Art in a Postmodern Jewel. The Carlos Museum is a beautiful Michael Graves building on the main quadrangle of Emory University. The setting is appropriate to the exquisite treasures the museum houses. While most visitors are awed by the fabulous ancient Egyptian collection, there are also wonderful galleries of classical, African, and Asian art. Atlanta's best-kept secret!
Absolute Archaeology. The collections, whether Egyptian, Classical, African, American or works on paper, are superbly installed. The Classical galleries display Greek and Roman art that would be the pride of any museum. Anywhere.
A HIDDEN GEM. . . . in Atlanta that draws international scholars with its treasures. If you haven't been there, go! Weekends are best when parking is easier.
Lovely!. What an enchanting place! The building itself is a gem-- wander through the intimate galleries and remember to enjoy the architecture. The collections are among the best I've seen. This museum is a wonderful tribute to ancient culture in a city often criticized for failing to preserve historic assets. Step into the Carlos and be transported thousands of years and millions of miles!
Favorite. The Carlos is a splendid little jewel for the city of Atlanta. Everything is top-notch: the collections, the atmosphere, the staff ... I hosted an event there last year and it was a phenomenal success.
